I took Top Shooter in the High Tier this season. First match of play-offs is tonight against a team we beat fairly badly just three weeks ago. Next week is a much tougher match if it plays out like I think it will. Our 3 also got a 20-0 skunk in his final match of the season. It was his first win all year.

what is your opinion on what i did last night. i have mixed emotions. on one hand i kinda feel like a sore loser and on the other i kinda feel justified.

i played napa laggers choice. i played this young kid. i kinda like him and think he is a pretty good shooter .

the 1st time i ever faced him we played 8 ball and i won 5-1 in a 5-3 race.

the 2nd time was 9 ball and i lost 4-3 in a 4-4 race.

last night i won the lag and chose 8 ball ad it was a 4-2 race. me going to 4.... i guess we both went down in handicap from last session. i lost 2-1 ...mainly because i played carelessly. i knocked in an early 8 in the 3rd rack trying to break out my last ball.

well he was estactic about his win. i graciously congratulated him on his win and told him good shooting. i piut up my cues and helped keep score on the 2 reamaining games.

during this time he was going around telling every one he beat me in our match. he was proud as a peacock and i kinda laughed about it.

well as we were finishing up he was playing 9 ball by himself as he always does. he comes about an hour early and stays about an hour after just practicing 9 ball or playing with any one who wants to play him.

when i grabbed my cues and headed towards the door i heard him bragging to a friend of his who just walked in about beating me. i stopped and asked him if he wanted to play a few games. he said sure. he said i guess you want to play 8 ball as that is your best game. i said no we can play 9 ball since that is your best game.

he grinned ear to ear and said sure. i won the flip and broke and ran all the way to the 6 ball where i made the classic mistake of thinking about the next shot while down on this shot. i overcut it by 2'' and he ran out.

as i was racking i told myself not to make another mistake. well i won the next 5 in a row with 2 break and runs mixed in there.

after i won the 5th one i said i am done. he shook my hand and said wow...you really kicked my ass.

i told him...when i win ...i win graciously ...win i lose ..i lose graciously. i said all that bragging you did tonight kinda ticked me off and gave me a lil incentive to show you that you aint as good as you think you are.

he said he was sorry and that he just got carried away with it. i said no problem and asked if he wanted to join my apa double jeapordy team. :grin-square: he said he would think about it.

Last night was our first week of a new 16 week league cycle.

It's a ball-handicap league, as well as a team rating differential/ games won modifier that adds to the lesser team's aggregate league ranking in the standings.

We won 11-5.

We played a team named 'Spastic Colons'.

We got lucky and we didn't stand behind them.:groucho:

Note: For league standings: We won 11 games. They won 5 plus .5 game 'modifier' for a total of 5.5 games won.

example: 'A' range=3 points/'B' range=2 points/'C' range= 1 point.//team maximum=10 points//maximum 'A+' =one on team(4 points).

"Modifier"....Us = 10 points/Them = 9 points.///10-9=1 divided by 2=.5=modifier.

The league is set up to encourage participation by lesser skilled players. Both aspects of handicapping can be tough to over come.

The league is often won by teams with 4 'C' players. They usually get the 8 or 7/or 6 against an 'A+', as well as often 3 games a week 'modifier' wins.

You see a lot of 'RAM' shots. It can be real uphill to play traditional tactics, due to non traditional countering shot selection.;)

good shooting .
Thanks. We got the win last night in 4 matches. Everybody shot well and won their matches. I beat the guy who was #2 in Top Shooter in a really tight match. We both needed 3 going into the last rack. A real nail biter. He's a good dude though and I always enjoy playing with him.

Next week we play the first place team for a spot in the Tri's. Match ups are tough with them. They have three 5s as the highest ranked players on the team. They're in their window for winning right now as a few of their guys are on the cusp of being bumped up and messing with their ability to post. Should be a good match.

The Vikings lost so I took my anger out on my opponent in 9 ball who was an APA 7 beating him 65-19 with 2 B&Rs...felt good for the W, but still stings about my team losing. Maybe I should play angry all the time!

So I have a lovely dilemma....my presence has been required to play on 3 valley teams. I have one of my best friends who's team will be soso even with me on there to bump up the curve a bit. Second is a friend of mine that I know will have a competitive team and I am sure they are fun to hang out with. 3rd is another friend who I played with their team a few years back and we got 2nd in the intermediate division, fun people to hang out with. 4th option is no dice on any of them, focus on poker as there is no money in pool anyway and football season is here which takes up too much time/effort (fantasy, bets, watching etc). Yikes!

I'd go where there are the most girls

fellas i think i am getting burnt out on pool.

i had my choice of whether to go to apa travel or in house money league tonight. i just stayed home.

the last few weeks i have found myself getting lax at the table. lost last wed napa league to a guy who should never beat me.

won sat napa league but i was down 2-0 and got ticked off cause i was playing bad and won the next 4 in a row winning 4-2 in a 4-4 race.

sun night double jeapordy. lost my 9 ball match 25-23 to a 3. got ticked off about that and won my 8 ball 4-1 in a 4-4 race.

i never practice on my home table and although i have any where from 1 to 2 hours free practice in most of my leagues i never get there early enough to practice. when i do get there i just watch every one else practicing until it is time for matches to start.

i have cut back on teams i play on this last year. guess i need to cut back a few more.

I'm feeling burnt out and I only play one night a week! My team has a bye this week and my girlfriend asked if I was going to miss playing. My response was "miss it?... nah..."

TBD... I may head up to Turning Stone this weekend to watch how the pros do it (and to lose 20 bucks in the video poker machine.)

I played for the first time in the Valley league here last night after deciding not to play APA this session. I went 5 for 5 so I played well, but even if I didn't I LOVE it. The format and rules are great, the matches move fast so we were done around 10, and I like my team. There is no going back.

I love playing pool, but boy do you play a lot :p

I think by only have a few league nights, you look forward to them more. At least that is what I suspect is going on here.

Of course, I'd like to have the opportunity to test that theory, but I'll stick with my two league nights a week for now

I agree with this. I've made the decision that I can only commit to one league at a time. The rest of the time I spend playing pool I play with friends or practice to try to get better for league. Playing 3 to 5 league nights a week would start to seem like work IMO.

Yep, time to cut back a bit more. Try and change to just one league night a week. It'll help remind you why you play - for fun. I like playing, too, but when I get overextended, I get a bit burnt out. That's why I like to go to league nights, but not necessarily be on the team. I can play all I want, hang out with my friends, yet still not feel like I have to be dedicated to so many nights a week. Right now, I've got a BCA night and a part-time APA day. I'm probably out another 3 nights a week, but it's because I want to be.

..and back to our regularly scheduled program..

I sat out last Thursday for BCA so that another person could sign up and get in on it. We should have enough room this week that it won't be an issue. Sunday, we had a player call in, so I couldn't play 9b, but I got another W in 8b. I think I need to have a little more focused practice again, because I feel as though I'm getting sloppy.

Last night was 10 Ball at my Mega Bucks League. As I'm just a three I played a 7 so in a race to 11 I got a handicap of 5 games and the 8 and out. With the 8 and out how could I lose? Just look for combinations with the 8, 9, and 10!!! So I won easily.

This and a recent blogpost by akaTrigger here makes me ask a question...

For the people who play rotation games in leagues but are NOT in APA (and the reason I specify that will become relevant shortly), do you or your teammates go for a lot of combination shots?

I see it frequently in my NAPA league and I think this is one area where the league structure encourages a bad habit. Namely that short races in rotation games means players go for low-percentage combinations more than they should.

I really try to avoid combinations as much as possible. My personal opinion is that unless the second ball is hanging, I'm wasting my inning by going for a combination.

Thoughts?

Oh, and the reason I excluded APA (if it isn't obvious) is that in APA 9-ball, there's no real reason to go for low-percentage combinations on the 9.
