As I've noted previously in a different post, itís a shame.

Among the most memorable matches ever played at the Derby was when the then 14 year old Fedor Gorst tested Alex Pagulayan to the max in a double hill 9-ball thriller ultimately won by Alex. At the time, I had never even heard of Gorst. If memory serves, Skyler Woodward (or was it Billy Thorpe?) reached the Bank Pool finals against SVB at about 16 years old, too.

Watching the young, emerging stars of the game has always been a thrill for this fan, and has always added flavor to the Derby City Classic. This is disheartening.

SVB lost to Morra in Banks.

Skyler won a thrilling Bank Ring Game as a teenager, out-dueling Bustamante.

We wonít see the future young guns in action (tournament and other) at the DCC, which is the biggest downer for me.

And how old is Tkach???

I first met PT walking down the corridors from the hotel to the tournament at the Horseshoe.

Thanks for the correction, Freddie. I know I remembered a memorable banks performance by a teen, but I guess the details are a faded memory.

Tkach will be 21 on 1/19/2020 and will, therefore, be of age for this year's Derby.

Hope you'll be my guest for a match or two at this year's Derby. See you in January, Freddie.

They probably won't be checking ID's throughout the building. They will probably check ID's to even get in. At the Ohio Casinos you can't get in the building unless you are 21. It may be the same with the Horseshoe now. Anytime I went to the Indiana casinos they were boats so anyone could be in the building but not in the boat. For those that have gone to the DCC and went to the casino know that there is an age check before you get on the boat. My guess is that it will be similar to Ohio and the age check will be at the beginning and you have to be 21 to get in the building. We shall see.

Yeah, I think Sky was young but past his teenage years.

Sky was playing TAP league (amateur league) a couple of years before that. I think he won a TAP singles event, then goes to DCC a few months later and cashes deep in a couple of events.

With the boat gone you'll need to be 21 to get in. Good opportunity for someone to do a junior version. Do it in Louisville somewhere a couple days/week before DCC. May work, may not. Just a thought.

They have one scheduled at a pool room in Louisville. I don't know the exact date yet.

That was at the 2014 DCC, so Skyler was 20. Quite a few observers called it the best such event they had ever seen. Here's what one fairly experienced guy had to say:

  • "Scott Frost and i did the commentary on the Ring Bank game. I have to honestly say that that was the best played Ring Game ever, and I have broadcast every one. That was absolutely the best banking I have ever seen -- by all the contestants -- in my whole career. Bustamonte played fabulous and lost! Skylar Woodward , who I predicted would not be able to stand up to Busty in the finals completely proved me wrong. Busty did everything that I figured he would do and applied extreme pressure with a devastating series of bank barrages -- but it was not enough! This young kid (20 yrs old?) shot the paint off of the balls and put on maybe the best bank performance that I have ever seen.
Mark my words, he will soon be the best bank pool player in the world.

    Beard"

From rack 7 to the end, the two of them took 59 shots and made 42 of them (71%)!

Would you travel to another city, arrange accommodation, and enter a tournament with that risk hanging over your head?

Maybe Gorst makes it to the finals and then the opponent has someone anonymously tip off the venue to get him thrown out, and win by default

lol, from what've I've observed, over the course of many DCCs, is that things are pretty loose at this event.

And stuff you wouldn't think would happen, or is even explicitly prohibited, do. But who knows? Maybe this will be the year when everything changes.

Lou Figueroa
but I doubt it

I don't know, maybe.

Mostly, I don't know or care about the age of any of the guys I play. And pool players, being the egalitarian lot they are, probably wouldn't care. Besides, it's not league play :-)
