i have a friend who is not yet hooked but plays some pool now and then, quite poorly, i try to educate him and said i'd mail some good youtube matches to study. then i came to think of the question above, which is really the best youtube clip for this purpose?

my suggestions, all in poor video quality:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ktve8XUDtFA (8-ball, bustie - deuel)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6q9vb2g-zjY (9-ball, immonen - alcano)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x93HB9Yje-E (9-ball, peach - gomez)

what do you think?

This may be a bit odd, but I really like watching the short runout media clips because of the camera angles and sharp video they used, plus you get a bit of the viewpoint of the pros. It may be better to watch to start someone off seeing how the high-level players and action players do things.

The camera angle and the measles ball really lets you see how much spin the pros put on the ball on certain shots to move around the table.

Great suggestion. With all the youtube videos I've watched, I can't believe I didn't know about these. Thanks.

Would it inspire someone to take up tennis to see Federer serve at 300MPH and have Nadal return it perfectly? Maybe. I think the largest reason to take up pool is because your friends are doing it.

For the education part, I'd recommend the YouTube clip "Learn to play pool in 10 minutes" by Mike Page of Fargo Billiards: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbmNcYH52eo

For matches, I think you want close matches with "interesting" things going on. The Reyes-Appleton match from the 2012 US Open is pretty good.

I think that seeing some great shots would inspire people to play (pool or whatever), I would watch the cueball do this magic thing and wonder how/why I can do that.

That's why I thought those highlights I linked would be good to show what a great game would look like without going though 2 hours of chalking, racking, standards shots, etc...

I would agree totally that you do something because you know someone else that is doing it, but to grow that into something past a casual night of holding a cue in the wrong way, into arguing about what layered tip gives you the best feel and spin per dollar, you need something special.

nah, one-pocket are for people like me who have already found salvation. the kids of today have too short attention span for that.

that match is a classic though, probably my favourite 1p match of all time.

I never posted anything with one pocket...

I might have them watch some of the Efren stuff. That one shot where he's hooked, too short and tight to jump and shoots the cue ball off the tit and it rolls right down the rail and pockets the object ball. They don't call him "The Magician" for nothing

One of the most exciting matches I've ever seen is the 1983 Caesars Tahoe Classic finals with Earl vs The Miz.

This match has everything: drama, risk taking, freewheeling, great shot making, great safeties, the crowd going wild, the first televised jump shot, the underdog vs champion, young vs old, the coming out of a legend, mustard colored cloth, a beautiful commentator with "80's hair". Everything.

It's fascinating to watch this match several times. The commentators don't give "Little Earl" a chance in hell and are just as blindsided as Mizerak at what starts to unfold.
