Bob, for clarification, can I assume this the same tournament that has been held in Midlothian, VA for the past number of years, and they are changing venues, or is this a separate straight pool tournament by the same name? As the name and logo are the same, I assume this is the same tournament in a new venue? - Thanks
Yup. Same promoter -- Peter Burrows. The format looks like the same, round robins followed by single elim.Bob, for clarification, can I assume this the same tournament that has been held in Midlothian, VA for the past number of years, and they are changing venues, or is this a separate straight pool tournament by the same name? I think that you saw Charlie William's event in early October last year. His event is moving up the Hudson and to the middle of August for this year. There was a 14.1 Tournament at Steinway Billiards, in October, is that one being held or is this replacing it ?
I've seen that one for the last 2 years.
I think it would be great if there were qualifiers. A 12-player qualifier field with a $50 entry could give the winner a little travel money along with his entry. A larger field could qualify two or have some local cash prizes.I shared this all over Facebook and it seems the common question is that if there are qualifiers ?
May be something to consider to gain more growth in this already great event
Steve
At the immediately previous location (Diamond Billiards in Midlothian, VA) the number of tables available for the group phase was an issue for a larger field. I think Peter Burrows may be looking at expanding the field slightly but that dilutes the quality of competition unless it's filled with additional top players. The field last year was fearsome.Oddball question, but what would be the negative to having these events just be an open? Besides the obvious players, why not have it be an open to encourage other players to play? Or is the entry fee too large and it's why we have qualifiers?

I think any player who wants to play who has reasonable credentials can get in. Maybe I can talk Peter into having a qualifier or two the day before the main tournament starts.
In general for a "properly" run tournament you want to know who's going to play a month ahead of time so you can get their pictures and bios into the program, and plan a schedule for the exact number of players. Each year there seems to be a few players who drop out at the last moment.
Is there a list of entrants
This is a slightly old list. I hear there have been some changes and there are currently 48 players.

sjm — Following up on the recent discussions regarding strength of field in this event as compared to the Charlie Williams event, and, more importantly, as compared to the US Open and other top straight pool tournaments “back in the day,” which players in this field do you consider to currently be bona fide “great” (or “world class” or whatever term you’d like to pick and perhaps attempt to define) straight pool players, as opposed to being “past their prime” (if they used to be “great” in straight pool ), never “great” at straight pool, or never “great” at any game of pocket billiards? Separately, who, if anyone, from among those missing from this field, would you consider to currently be a “great” straight pool player (e.g., perhaps Feijen, Appleton)?
Seth
I'm restricting this to those that have shown strong form in 14.1 at some point recently, not just talented guys who shoot straight and, therefore, can't be discounted.
Using this principle, I'd call eleven of these to be world class "great" at present, namely Ruslan Chinakhov, Mike Davis, Max Eberle, Thorsten Hohmann, Mika Immonen, Dennis Orcollo, Alex Pagulayan, Tony Robles, John Schmidt, Ralf Souquet, and Lee Van Corteza.
Off the top of my head, the most noteworthy world class "great" straight pool players at present who are missing: Darren Appleton, Nick Vandenberg, Niels Feijen, Oliver Ortmann, Jayson Shaw, Earl Strickland, Johnny Archer, Stefan Cohen, Shane Van Boening, Corey Deuel, Danny Harriman, Dennis Hatch and Francisco Bustamante.
