Ok where can I find something to study crowding patterns, I cannot keep the balls together for shot, most im game is 6, most in practice after shoving 2 balls together in the corner was 11

I seen a crowding pattern vid on yt but it wasn't long at all,
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OU5tsldgQX8
I really enjoy straight rail and want to learn how to play it,

Although I don't think they have any instructional material on straight rail, kozoom.com has a nice collection of straight rail matches. Search for them under 'free game'. There more than a few runs of 400, so definitely something to be learned.

They may have some instructional articles though, but most of it is 3 cushion and balkline.

this series was shot ..... quite awhile back but you can search and get it all online they are numbered and the overhead cam is very good ... unfortunately it is in Dutch so any commentary re - stroking , follow thru , etc. is missed .

There is a fountain of straight rail videos in Kozoom's archival matches. Watch, set up the shots, and replicate the results

Here's a good lesson. 400 points from the break.
http://www.kozoom.com/en/billiard-carom/video/7526.html

Notice 8 innings to gather. 14 innings to get on the rail.
Don't be in a hurry. Make each shot mean something but stay calm.
Learn the soft touch.
Learn the ultra thin hit with the soft touch.
Learn the kiss back and when to use it and how.
Be patient and conservative in your game.

And of course you'll need to learn masse to hit the big numbers.
The game has no respect. Its very tough to make big runs. Most can't get past 6 or 10.

What standard of player does it take to score 100 regularly? It sometimes sounds like any half decent player can do it, but the level of control and consistency I see in those videos shows that they are very high level players. But I seem to remember reading that the top players can run 100 pretty much on command.

I've only been on a carom table once and we played straight rail. I managed an 8 which I know isn't very good, but it was quite fun. Love watching carom though.

Are you able to view the other matches on
Youtube besides the Dutch ones? In the Dutch stream there is periods of inactivity between the matches where there is just the table and the three balls bunched together in the center of the table. Hope you are able to see the other youtube stuff.

For some older resources from the Golden Age of American Billiards I can suggest Daly's Billiard Book (1913) and Modern Billiards by the Brunswick-Balke-Collender company.

Links to where you can view pdfs of each book online:

https://books.google.com/books?id=q...=onepage&q=modern billiards brunswick&f=false

and

http://www.chicagobilliardmuseum.org/files/1913_Daly_s_billiard_book.pdf

They are also both available in hard print at abebooks:

and

http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/Boo...=t&sortby=17&tn=modern billiards&an=brunswick

There is always the Hoppe book as well, which treats both straight and 3-cushion.

This is excellent, just got to watch it, picked up a few techniques I'm going to use when I see a separation beginning

I'm still playing free game
I see what the good players do while nursing the rail, I'm on kozoom I'll always watch a good straight rail match

But man it's tough to get the hang of the rail nurse
I feel like I'm better at 3c than this game, I either know/can see how to hit it or there's nothing I see

Rail nursing I'm kinda clueless, but enjoying the challenge

Thanks for these buddy!

I see that in certain situations I choose the correct effect for position, I just screw it up in the execution

hehe, normal. You'll spend your entire life to try to achieve these as perfectly as you imagine the shots :) , and there is no end to this quest. That's straight rail.

one key is to master the speed levels in the 1/3 of the table, and that's not mostly due to your stroke speed, but to the "quantity of OB1" at a known stroke speed. Work to find the appropriate "quantity" of the OB1 who gives you the "automatic speed" of the ob1 when you die on the ob2. That's a productive training. It's "most thick that you believe". This advice is usefull when you begin to learn straight rail. Think to it . More thick.

another advice i would suggest you, if you train to master the straight rail, is to play on a small table.
9feet/2m80 , or even smaller 2m60 (<- norm in belgium under 20 of general average in tournament :) belgians are verrrry serious straight rail opponents.incredible level they play. what they call "medium players" are masters level in the usa ... their masters -"Honneur" in their league-can really play >200 general average in a tournament on a 10feet , 400 points distance. not a joke).
To learn straight rail on a 10feet , 3.10 is wayyyyy too hard IMHO. That's the problem you have in the usa, where so many tables in the poolrooms are 10feet.
