The oldest pool room in Denver Did close a few years back, it was at the corner of 38th and Sheridan, about 4-6 blocks west on 38th from Elitch Gardens Amusement Park. This room was also, the pool room Omaha Fats ''parked it'' in his earlier days. I think it was the first pool room built in Denver. Years later Frank Burgess opened up two more Huge rooms within that Western part of Denver. And Colfax was already there, soon to be enlarged then the all night room in Lakewood. Seen a wait list at 2 in the am many times.

Has anyone here, obviously Alive. Played or gambled on the front Gold Crown by the bar....(table #4?) I think? When it was Paradise, when Terry owned it or before Terry, when it was the FF Center?

What I'm trying to remember, was the table.... ''RIGHT AT HE BAR, l/side when you faced the bar then looked, OVER YOUR LEFT SHOULDER....was that TABLE, table number #4?

I used to take my daughters to Elitches on 38th Ave. every year, was a great time for family and friends. Hot Dogs :)....but I was lucky as a kid, living 30 miles from another Amusement park growing up.

Elitches was Big, BUT was a MINI when compared to- Riverview Park in Chicago IL, that I went to as a kid 3 - 4 times.

Riverview Amusement Park, ''in'' Chicago (74 acres) WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS....the Full Monty, with ''Bearded ladies'' 3 eyed Cows, Glass house, haunted house, FIVE different speed Rollercoasters, the one called ''the Bobs'' was FAST. Fire eaters, snake ladies and on and on. This carnival opened up before 1910, maybe that's why second city was Real, thus creating, Bill Murray, Beleuschi, Akroyd etc..........................stone cold Comedians.

My buddy Tim Thompson who occasionally posts on here, "lived" in that poolroom (Family Fun Center) for many years in his younger days. He was one of the best players in the Denver area back then. He listed Andrew Hudson as his biggest pool influence. I'm sure you know who he was. I will ask Tim to check out this thread.

I was in there twice back in the mid 70's, played Tim one time and some lanky guy called Cowboy the other time (he wore cowboy boots). But I can't answer your question. Tim can.

I know Hank removed it, and put in boxes. The most amazing thing about this room, from ANY room I've ever been in was the ball set for this table, and probably all the other sets.

This table had a Brunswick centennial ball set that was physically worn out, they no longer played like pool balls. Played with, clay and every other type one can imagine....but I NEVER knew a ball set could be ''that'' worn. The collision life was ZILCH. Weird....should of gave em to a circus act tent with pool tables.

Bill,

I played at the Fun Center for several years when Tony and his brother Johnny owned it.

Way before Terry owned it.

I was the best player in the room except for Russ Trotter playing 3C.

Andy Hudson was a very good Black player. I gave him the 8 and beat him easily. We played even OP but he finally quit that. He did beat me at Bank once.

I played San Jose Dick one pocket on the table you are talking about. He won.
I had beaten him the day before playing 9 ball.

Omaha Fats hung around there and I played him 8 to 4 and the break for cheap money.

Many players traveled through and I played anyone that came to the Fun Center.

It was a great room in those days.

Thx....yeah it was. That was during the days of RR travel and the Zephyr train, still doing it's thing and no interstate 70 rolling thru the rockies.

When I got to CO, Herman owned the poolroom gun store on the main drag, and there was a 24 hr. all night bar table big ball gambling spot, below ground. And titty bars just 1.5 miles south, with a pool room owner, who's daughter married Wade Crane.

Allot passed thru those doors in it's western heyday.
PM me, I'll send ya a pic of that table, when completed.
If the slate pins don't match perfect he'll remove em. My feeling, it's a good table, good gamblers won't play on a chit table, if they have a choice.

I gambled on that table many times. Nobody famous. Also played the finals of the Thursday night tournament on it. Even though I was known as a “bar box specialist” I managed to win that tournament. :). Played you many times too although I was never in your league but always enjoyed playing you in tournaments.

I once beat Fats out of $10 playing $2 a game six ball. He always called me Mister after that. I should have framed that ten dollar bill.

I can't provide any useful information regarding the original post but I did play in that pool room many times in the 1963-1964 time period when I was a student at Denver University. Sorry to hear that it is no longer there.
