There really are just a few things if you want to play good one pocket:

Learn to play Straight Pool
Learn to play Bank Pool
Learn to play Ten Ball
Learn to use your imagination
Play the score

For the most part you just described Measurman.

Cuebuddy> a little confused about playing the score?

I once watched a Rorie Calhoun western movie
the hero kept getting in fights at the poker game

the other guys asked him why he was still playing with sore losers

He replied "It beats playing with winners"

Hence my favorite maxim

Play conservatively against players who can't hurt you.
Play aggressively against players who can.

Weak players will eventually give you the game if you just wait long enough
You know who they are. Those are the players who, with an open rack
typically run no more than 2 or 3 balls at a time.

The stronger the player the fewer their mistakes.
You know who they are too. Those are the players who run several balls
when you think they won't run more than 2 or 3 balls.

Keep playing defense against strong players and you will lose.
Get those players knocking balls away from YOUR hole,
not the other way around. You can only do that by adopting an aggressive
attitude every time you step to the table.

So, be better prepared to play better players by developing better offensive skills
at the practice table and as someone earlier suggested; strengthen your imaginative skills by studying my book and videos.
.ABOVE ALL! LEARN CAROMS! ALL KINDS OF CAROMS.
They are the life blood of all pool games!

Sorry, but there is no substitute for a powerful offense!

If you’re 3 or 4 balls up and now you’re fighting for the next ball....
...start moving the balls up table...he needs them more than you do.
...take away a big run.

"Run more 8 & outs."

Ronnie Allen

There is a book, (Billiards: Hustlers and Heroes, Legends and Lies and the Search for Higher Truth on the Green Felt), that has a chapter of transcribed dialog between Gene Nagy and Jersey Red from a gambling session.

I cant remember exactly what Red said, something along the lines of 'I know more moves than you', to which Nagy replied, "8 and out is the only move I need to know".

Never play a guy with a seeing-eye dog.

More than likely, you're in a trap.

Unless your seeing-eye dog knows his dog.

If a man says he knows nothing about one pocket...but he’ll take two hit and the pick....
...just walk away from him...
