I'm not sure if the "no kicking" rule is meant for only offensive shots, but I can't wrap my head around how a person can effectively play the game without a healthy supply of defensive kicks, especially with one ball left on the table.

What about kicking1-rail to pocket a ball hanging in the other guy's hole?... I think every one-pocket player has to be proficient at and confident in shooting this shot when it inevitably comes-up.

What about kicking 2-rails into a line of spotted balls?

What I take away from that “kicking rule” is not to kick at a certain shot. Your on your rail somewhat close to your pocket. The ball is near your opponents rail a little lower than the CB is most tempting. Don’t try to kick that to your pocket...because if you miss long you leave a bank, miss short you might leave a bank or a straight in shot if you kick it hard.

His name is Corey.

It cracks me up every time I watch that stream with Billy, Corey, and
Scott. I must have watched it 20 times and still can’t get enough.

What stream is this?

It is a foolproof method of keeping dishonest opponents from stealing them.

Duh.

So, bearing in mind that I am a dishonest opponent, when can we play? :D

(I want a game where I get all my balls and my opponent gives me all of his balls too.... so I won't steal them)

Stand behind where you plan on leaving the cb and ask yourself what you'd do from there if you were the other player. Don't assume the other player won't see the same lockup trap shot that you see.

This might be the best thing I have learned about the game.
I was leaving too many long easy angle banks.
Now I try to leave awkward angles if I must.
Also I try to tie up the banking lanes with a ball or two.

Here's a (slightly) organized list of all the "commandments" suggested both here and in the same thread over on onepocket.org.

Glad you like it, Larry - hope some find it interesting, maybe even helpful.

I really did it for myself, to see if I could distill the key bullet points from all the comments posted - but in the end I like the context and nuance added by all the slightly different comments.

Best post, right here! :)

Thou shalt watch Accu-stats one pocket matches

Thou shalt buy Tom Wirth’s book

Remember thy pocket, and keep it hole-y

Thou shalt choose defense over offense

Thou shalt take out thy opponent’s hanger, even if it means pocketing it

Honor thy cueball and keep it safe

Thou shalt not leave thy opponent’s corner ball available after the break

Thou shalt learn to shoot a spot shot

Thou shalt play the score

Though shallt cringe when you hear the words “Bet High, Kiss Low”

Freddie <~~~ hope this helps....
