Bob, for clarification, can I assume this the same tournament that has been held in Midlothian, VA for the past number of years, and they are changing venues, or is this a separate straight pool tournament by the same name? As the name and logo are the same, I assume this is the same tournament in a new venue? - Thanks

Yup. Same promoter -- Peter Burrows. The format looks like the same, round robins followed by single elim.

I shared this all over Facebook and it seems the common question is that if there are qualifiers ?

May be something to consider to gain more growth in this already great event

Have never been qualifiers in the past. On the contrary you had to get in early to make sure you got a spot. Peter Burrows is a tireless promoter and talks directly to top players to get them to attend his events.
Hopefully the change in venue doesn't affect anything. Probably won't because I'm sure all the top players will be attending Pats 9ball tournament.
I'm planning to talk to Megan soon and get more info which I'll pass on.

There was a 14.1 Tournament at Steinway Billiards, in October, is that one being held or is this replacing it ?
I've seen that one for the last 2 years.

I think that you saw Charlie William's event in early October last year. His event is moving up the Hudson and to the middle of August for this year.

The American 14.1 Championship is promoted by Peter Burrows and has been in Midlothian (near Richmond) for about 4 years. Before that I think it was the Maryland State 14.1 Championship.

This last year Peter had a better turnout and a larger prize fund that Charlie's event and I think it could fairly be considered the de facto world championship although it did not have a WPA scanction.

I think it would be great if there were qualifiers. A 12-player qualifier field with a $50 entry could give the winner a little travel money along with his entry. A larger field could qualify two or have some local cash prizes.

Oddball question, but what would be the negative to having these events just be an open? Besides the obvious players, why not have it be an open to encourage other players to play? Or is the entry fee too large and it's why we have qualifiers?

At the immediately previous location (Diamond Billiards in Midlothian, VA) the number of tables available for the group phase was an issue for a larger field. I think Peter Burrows may be looking at expanding the field slightly but that dilutes the quality of competition unless it's filled with additional top players. The field last year was fearsome.

I think any player who wants to play who has reasonable credentials can get in. Maybe I can talk Peter into having a qualifier or two the day before the main tournament starts.

In general for a "properly" run tournament you want to know who's going to play a month ahead of time so you can get their pictures and bios into the program, and plan a schedule for the exact number of players. Each year there seems to be a few players who drop out at the last moment.

Two days after the conclusion of the American 14.1 at the Carom Cafe, the inaugural US International 9-Ball Open will kick off in Norfolk, from October 21-27. Many of the top pros will travel down from NYC to Norfolk for this $50,000 added event, produced by Pat Fleming. Then, from November 7 to Nov.11, The Tornado Open will be start at the Hard Rock Casino in Atlantic City...another big pro event to add to the busy Fall schedule on the East Coast.
