Pool players rarely say nice things about other pool players.

I asked Buddy Hall about Billy and he said for a period of time, Billy was the best 9 ball player in the country.

Pretty nice compliment from a guy that most think is the best 9 ball player of all time.

I would define BC as a master of the game. There are "A" players and there are masters.

I like Billy, but sometimes he talks a little too much. My favorite
is Danny Diliberto and when he was alive Grady Matthews

Grady and Billy together were a great pool commentary team.

Greater than the sum of its parts and all that.

Yes.... But I felt it was more about the entertainment of hearing them bicker, than the actual pool content. I felt that Grady always wore the bigger pants as far as the actual knowledge of the game, though. I am of the opinion that choosing to go with Billy over Grady when the two just couldn't get along was a disservice to the Accu-Stats fans... And Grady prolly needed the money more. Much more.

That being said... For my money, Jeremy Jones is the new gold standard for One Pocket commentary. He catches the nuances of what playing to a certain portion of the table gives up to the incoming player, and what move is gonna get played back likely, before THIS inning is played.. 2nd level thinking, a la Efren. I've gotten so much more out of listening to his commentary than any current commentator, bar none.

Eh. Billy has always been too cautious of a One Pocket player. Grady won many more major One pocket events, if I am not mistaken. Counterintuitively, safety was never a huge part of his 9 ball game, and he was smart with the money, so didn't match up with world-beaters often, so he didn't need it.. I don't think he is necessarily the person to address the general subpar safety play in years past.

I like the Jeremy Jones / Johann combination. Jeremy Jones is likely the smartest pro player out there today. It's probably only his fundamentals that keep him from still being a force in the game.

I watched a vid with Corey and Billy (I think) and a third guy commenting. Wish I had saved the link. Anyone know the one I am thinking of?

Corey was coming up with off the wall scenarios and Billy and the other guy were razzing him pretty badly.

I remember that match.. Unfortunately, Accu-Stats video doesn't get that people often choose which videos to buy based on the commentators, and isn't listing the commentators on the videos. I have a large library that I've converted to digital/mp4, but it would take me a while to scan through the videos to find that one.. It would be relatively early in his One Pocket career, I think? Maybe mid 90's to mid 2000's?
