FYI, here's a quote from the BU Exam Challenge rules that might be helpful:

Your submitted video must be a continuous, uninterrupted, and unedited run at the entire Exam, and it must be obvious there is no trickery or cheating involved. During the entire video, stay in the frame of the camera (unless you absolutely need to take a bathroom break), keep balls on the table during each drill (e.g., pulling them out in groups of 4, 5, 8, or 10 during Exam I), and keep your cue on or against the table when spotting balls and between drills. You are not allowed to practice shots in between each of the required drills or shots. If you need to break up your video into multiple parts to store or upload them separately, make sure it is totally obvious that the run is being continued without interruption (e.g., by pausing in the middle of a drill with all of the balls and your cue remaining on the table). If you are having trouble with your video file sizes being too large, you can dramatically compress them using a free software tool called HandBrake.

Good luck in the Challenges,
Dave

Okay but more often than not, I will be focused on the playing then I hear a beep which means the camera stopped recording, meanwhile at this second when the video stopped the cue is in my hand maybe chalking or something.

So you mean after this I put the cue on the table then start recording?

Do you have a smart phone with an alarm app? Mine came with one that you can easily set to the correct minute. If you start your second camera before you turn the first one off, the join should be pretty clear.

To smoochie, I have a canon DSLR with the same issue. I found a 3rd party firmware hack that restarts the recording instantly. I bet there is something similar for Nikon. Btw, the 29 min limit is due to a tax. Over 30 min and the camera is classified as a camcorder and there is a special tax for that.

I've checked with the manufacturer and it is indeed set to be limited to a max of 29mins for videos, so with this, I don't know how to work around this issue, you want a no-edit, but I can only make a 29mins then 29mins then 29mins if needed, is this accepted?
It is memory card issue. They use Fat32 file system. Which only is capable 4gb max file size. Same with smart phones. If one uses phones internal memory that is NTFS then can hve more thatn 4gb files..
If you could have memory cards that use NTFS they should work with longer vids

Dunno if there are that kind memory cards in market. I had same issue with phones years ago. Then I could not find NTFS file system memory cards..

Thanks all for the suggestions, i'll just use a timer and deliberately stop recording at 25mins, then put my cue on the table and record again.

Lets see how that goes.

That's why I suggested setting an alarm, so you don't need to think about it.

No. When your set alarm goes off (well before the camera stops), put your cue on or against the table, and if there are no balls on the table, set up the next rack. Then stop the camera and save the file. Then restart the camera, with everything still in the same place. Continue and repeat as many times as necessary.

Good luck,
Dave

I tried it, its nice, I did fine until rack 14 and 15.

Basically the whole thing is great practice except rack 14 and 15 in my opinion, because these two racks in the end are luck based, it depends how the balls stand in the end, doesn't matter good break or bad break cause the way the layout will be, is the major factor of you doing well or bad, even if you broke very nicely, sometimes balls sit in awkward positions, no matter how you try to remove clusters, it is still luck if you remove the clusters, maybe they close back up.

Also there's no secondary chance for rack 14 and 15, imo only these two racks needs to be modified, or else people will mess up on these two racks until they get lucky one day and do good then post results.

For those people that take many takes until they get lucky, good luck! so you dont use so many re-trys.

I agree with you concerning Level 16 (15 ball rotation). You can’t expect to get out every time, and a little luck with ball layout can make a big difference. A good rack and break help a lot too. The progressive/adaptive version of RDS is better for practice. But the RDS 100 is still is nice challenge. Working hard to get a high score in the Challenge (requiring a combination of lots of skill, some smarts, and a little luck) has certainly motivated me to practice more than I would have otherwise recently.

Regards,
Dave

Yes I meant 15 & 16, you are corrct.

One last question, can I do them in any order? i.e. from 16 to 1, instead from 1 to 16...because the first 9 of these are easy, it gets tiring to repeat - no real practice.

That's a good idea, but no. You need to earn the right to attempt the higher levels by first making it though all the early levels without making lots of careless and costly mistakes. I know ... I am mean.

Dave

Thank you for noticing. There were a couple of times where I had a good shot at 100 but made careless mistakes. I plan to keep trying, but it is difficult to take the abuse at times ... not missing anything until Levels 15 and 16 (which I've done quite a few times), and then not having a reasonable out due to multiple problems after the break. I guess I need to break better (and not make all those careless mistakes ).

Regards,
Dave

I've had a bit of a break from the challenge and recently switched to a Cynergy. Maybe I'll give it another run and see if I can make it into the 90s with some new CF technology action.
