Extraordinary is the new normal at the professional level. Very high runs, very fast starts, comebacks from seemingly hopeless deficits and runs in sudden death are standard in all tournaments these days.
An example is what happened in sudden death in the Merckx-Blomdahl match. After tying at 40, Merckx runs seven. Blomdahl must run seven to force another shootout or eight to win the match. If he falls short, he is out of the tournament. He runs eight under this mind-numbing pressure.
In the semi-finals, Blomdahl won the lag against Sameh Sidhom. His first four innings were 12-6-0-5, while holding Sidhom scoreless. His tenth inning was 11 and out. Final score: 40-18.
Blomdahl is now a six-time world champion in the UMB era.
