Pool halls: Picking a table.

OK, here's a rant. You're the first person at the hall when it opens at 11 in the morning. There are eight tables in the place so you pick one in the corner to avoid the inevitable bumping into others when you shoot. Then 5 minutes later the next group comes in and they pick the table right NEXT to you.

Now I've been playing at this place for years and I know that the table next to me doesn't play any better than any of the rest, so why choose one smack dab next to someone already playing? And these are guys that brought their own cues and appear they've been around and should know better.

I'm like WTF guys?!?! I know for a fact the bartender didn't tell them to play there since it's known you can pick any table you want.

And this isn't the first time this has happened, either. Annoys the living pi$$ out of me.

Rant over.

I'm with you all the way, Chuck. What you experienced is a common occurence in practically every pool room across the country. I've never been able to figure it out. It seems to me that bartenders, counterguys/girls, owners, whatever, would be more in tune to their serious customers' needs and would strongly suggest that later arrivers take tables away from those already there in order to make play more enjoyable for everyone. But do they do that? Never!

Clearly, what bugs you, bugs me, too!

The "Houseman" (counter "person" EEOC) should "assign" tables to customers. In my room the only people we ask "what" table do you want are the "PLAYERS"...."civilians" go to their "ASSIGNED" tables.

Just smash the CB onto their table a few times when you break. Usually gets them to move. :)

People like to be close to other people. We are like ants.

I often think this is it. It's not malice. I think some people just naturally think that being next to the other people is the right thing.

The same reason I can pull into an empty parking lot, go into a business and come back there will be a truck and van parked on each side of me.

Socialist Pool...

In case you haven't noticed but pool leagues are a socialist concept which has sucked the life out of pool room owners who are forced in todays economy to cater to their demands. In the old days when poolrooms had character the best tables were exclusive to the heavy hitters and the gamblers. Today's fun pool is take any table you want and be oblivious to anyone shooting or gambling on another table. After all, the vast majority of league players play for bragging rights and wouldn't bet a quarter unless you spotted them the world. So if you are really serious about becoming a really good player you must elevate your playing conditions to a room more suited for professional play or purchase a table for your home.
Most large professional tournaments will provide a suitable playing environment and those pro's affected by noisy crowds are adapting to listening to their music.

The counter person should be knowledgeable enough to keep the casual players away from the regulars. The owner would ask but would tend to suggest another if there was a regular near that particular table.

They liked you

Possibly your smell..

Try not using deodorant next time,
Or if that was status quo; proceed to donning deodorant

One way or another you should find success

Next time leave your cue cases on top of that table that you don't want them playing on...

I once worked part time in a room that had 36 Gold Crowns. All the lights would be off untill someone wanted a table and the computer would turn that light on only say table 25. So I one day I handed this couple the tray of balls and said "Table 25 it's over there". So i would now watch them go to a table with no lights on and start to play. Now this happened when only a handful of tables were in use and the part of the room they were at was pretty dark and you could plainly see that a couple of tables away there was a table with the lights on and nobody playing. I let them play in the dark until they came and asked me to turn the lights on. Then I would tell them they are on the wrong table. WTF folks.
