barry hearn has a soft spot for earl, and has said he likes both his brilliance and his ups and downs. but there has been only downs for the last five years, we all know that. what earl is doing is tainting his reputation and its a pity because had he quit ten years ago he would deservedly have been heralded as the greatest 9-ball player ever

hey, got a response from wpm to my question about the not-quite brits in the draw-
for anybody interested, they got in coz they're "top players" in their respective countries-

"With 24 players we select on a global basis hence the title of the event.

Justin and Matt are top players in their countries.

There is an automatic criteria and these are the eight seeded players:

European Champion

Ladies World No.1

Men’s World No.1

Mosconi Cup MVP

Previous Champion

Asian Champion

US Open Champion

WPA World 9 Ball Champion

Best wishes"

Excellent observation. Ted Williams, not the most likeable guy, but probably the greatest hitter in MLB history, quit when he was still near the top of his skills. Ted had plenty of money and had other passions, like fishing.
Earl has neither money nor passion for anything other than pool.
That's why he continues to play and damage his image.

Justin just beat makkonen. Great position play and snooker stance. A missed 9 was a bit odd though

Earl can still play great compared to most of us, but he’s not a threat to the worlds best players anymore. It’s a shame the way he acts. Maybe it’s just frustration from not being able to perform like he once did. I guess maybe Earl just refuses to admit that.

True.
Deep in his own heart, he knows it.
Now, he's beginning to admit it publicly.

I swear Melling just threw that match. He was half the table out on a positional shot, hooked himself then completely missed the kick

Or he was there to be a good laugh for some Euroholes

That may be true but to say Kachi is not a great player but a good player is simply classless something Earl has been his whole career , he has the opportunity to rectify some of that and go out with class and hand the torch over in doing so to so many that that respect him for his accomplishments and treat him as a icon

He gave up on going out with class 20 years ago.

Earl's act got old a long time ago! He has no business in a major pool competition. The fact that he got invited is a charity case.

Barry Hearn isn’t motivated by charity. Earl is controversial and that gets views. That’s why they interviewed him after the match and goaded him into going off more than he had already.

Barry got exactly what he paid for, IMHO.

Mika’s wingman losing to Sajich was not that surprising. Even though his play has gone up a lot, I am more surprised why Petri was chosen as one of the 16 prelim players. Probably chosen to represent his country so that whole of Euro is represented.
Sajich won 6 in row when down 0-3.
Melling loss is a big upset of the day even though any of them can beat each other in short race to 7
2 Oceanians in last 16-probably the most number in this event.
Looking at scores for Day 1, Average racks won by losers 2.75. Which means winning margin is 4.25 racks which is quite big, not surprising for winner breaks. For such short race , better to have alternate break.
Table was breaking easy in later matches . Really should be 9 on spot instead of 1. :grin-square:

Bingo!

People used to demean and criticize Allex Higgins when he was alive, but when he passed away, you should have seen the tribute to him. He was loved by everyone. They loved to hate him when he was alive, but when he passed, they all came out and gave him a lot of love for this snooker champion.

Earl is a living legend and a champion. Those who don't like him are entitled to their opinion, but there are many, many folks who do enjoy and love Earl. When you meet him in person, like some of us have, and hang out with him, he's fun to be with. Only in pool can mainstream folks hang out with the champions!
