Tournament scheduling and working together

When I haven't been cleaning up this juvenile jabbing going on in NPR today, I've been thinking about this silly tourney scheduling situation.

A room in Birmingham announced last night that they are doing a $10,000 added event on January 6-10. That's great. An opportunity for players to make some money. Only problem is that it's the same weekend as Turning Stone and the World 9-Ball Championship.

I realize that Turning Stone "could" still get cancelled by the casino, and that Matchroom doesn't have any details on their event yet, but what is it going to take for tournament promoters to get together with one calendar they can check for major events before they schedule something? I have suggested the AzB calendar, but it doesn't have to be that. There just needs to be one central schedule for this sort of thing.

This is not just a complaint. I am asking for ideas to make this happen. I have thought about a universal US point system that awards points based on the added money and field for an event. That way something like this Alabama event could earn points for players, just like Turning Stone could. But the rooms would have to agree to not schedule on top of each other.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Reasons why it wouldn't work?

These guys had to know it was the same weekend as Turning Stone, right? If not that’s half your problem right there. Or maybe they just want a regional event. Either way we need promoters who know how to use google and spend ten minutes looking up what tournaments are scheduled before they pull the trigger on an event.

Too bad there's not a huge online pool website that they could submit to and check.

Long held more established tournaments are not likely to change their dates to avoid conflicting with a newer tournament. It’s up to the newer tournament promoter to check and make sure their dates don’t conflict with a major tournament, if they’re looking to attract the top pro players.

It’s herding cats forget about it.

But this particular example, I see no conflict. I doubt more than 2 players would have played in both events if they were a month apart. Alabama is very very far from NY.

In theory, it should be the BCA that would organize that. I think they have neither the interest nor the bandwidth.

If not the BCA, then who should sanction pro events in the US? Who will be the cat herder? Some new pro organization?

Scheduling

I would welcome something being organized to protect and promote events and dates. When I was Affiliated with Diamond we discussed something similar and even had some posts on Az billiards. This over 10 years ago.

Didn’t really attract any support if I remember correctly, however I had done pretty good concepts that I started to develop.

It is needed. Especially in these difficult times.

Ten thousand added is more of a Regional size tournament. Only a handful of South East players if that much would make it to Turning Stone so it does not create much of a conflict.

I think coming up with a viable point system would work. Among other things points could help earn a player a spot in a limited sized field over someone who has not attended any point paying events. The points need some kind of value to the player to encourage players to attend one event over another, at this point maybe promoters would consider other events on the same day/weekend when scheduling.
