If I could have the game of just one of today's active players, it would likely be Alex.

Well.....

Alex is the whole package,, the real deal and he looks like a hoot to be around. I really like watching him and Shane slug it out. Shane is right there for me and Dennis, what ain't Dennis good at in pool?

The one thing that bugs me is Dennis and Alex not matching up in 1 Pocket. Forget who is whos backer and all the respect excuses. They should show some mercy to guys like me who want to see the great ones going toe to toe.

I know the Pinoy gang is clannish, I get that, but dang we are not having some good pool battles because of it!

On second thought, vintage Efren is my pick!

I think if he had a mind to play any other disciplines of cue sports he would dominate the field. His skill along with his incredible mental strength are unmatched.

Currently it is Skyler Woodward. I have known him since he was just a young pup, and he represents himself and the pool world with class.

Efren is the best player I have ever seen but he is not the player he once was, but as far as the best all-around player he is the best ever, period. Beyond that, he always is humble and a class act.

a lot of names in this thread..fun to see how many of the same pop up, as well as names I've not seen much, like a lot of the old school guys.

it is interesting that so many chinese/taiwanese players appear to not participate in different games- how come?

melling is no doubt a helluva player. I wouldn't have immediately thought of mark selby, but man can shoot- reminds me of ronnie o, steve davis and them playing 9-ball.

seems like those guys, as well as the players mentioned most here- efren, alex, dennis, shane, etc. were/are considered amongst the best at individual games, so I guess what it took for one game, translated to others. hmm...

thanks all for the replies!

bonus: do any female players out there come to mind as great "all-around"?
I know allison fisher, then karen corr and kelly fisher were all proficient at snooker before making the jump to pool and finding success..

That pales in comparison to Dennis' record in 14.1 events, but you know that already.

Jeannette lee is proficient at 1p, as well as other American pool games. I believe she also knows a bit about 3c.

Nope. Players that dabble in related games don't approach the level of those games' specialists.

Of recent example: Alex's and Corey's forays into snooker.

Desire plays a minimal role in billiards, like chess...and unlike sports of physical strength.

When was the last time you saw a pool player poop in his pants coz he tried too hard?! Eww-hhahaha

I know I'm biased, but mine is Allen Hopkins. His ability to play every single game at the top level was astounding. In his prime, I'm pretty sure no one was asking him to play all-around sets.

I think you're overlooking someone. Seriously, was there any game that Allen Hopkins played better than his contemporary Nick Varner (during their primes)?

Nick was a slightly stronger 14.1 player, he was probably Allen's equal at one pocket, Nick was much stronger at bank pool, Nick was better at eight ball and Nick was much better at nine ball.

I don't know if Nick was asking Allen to play all-around sets, but Allen would have needed some weight.

I'm also a fan of Danny Harriman (in spite of his quirks) and John Schmidt as all-around players. Not saying they're favored to beat the rest of this group in any one game (with the possible exception of 14:1), but they're both very good players at multiple games. If you were going to use somebody as an example of excellent mechanics, you could do a lot worse than Danny.

I remember seeing Danny Harriman at a pool hall in Cape Girardeau MO, back in the late 90's or early 2000's (my memory is so bad when it comes to remembering dates), and the only game that he could find was with this guy who played him where every shot they had to use the opposite shooting hand (so they had to switch from right handed to left handed, every shot), and his playing really impressed me. He was actually running out playing like that, and beating the other guy. Great player.
