I'm prepared to put in the time, as I can't play as much pool anymore (back is acting up), but I'm worried that I may be too old to learn to play well (40). Alternatively, I might try an instrument I can play while standing up, like a flute or a saxophone, as that may be better for my back. Anyhow, curious to hear from you.
I got my first keyboards in my 30's.

I'm gonna say yes.

I started playing the guitar to relieve stress during grad school and pretty much had the whole musician experience. Started a two man band with a friend. Got a female lead singer and a couple of gigs and then her friend was a (terrible) guitarist but she wanted her in the band so I started playing drums and then the internal politics broke up the band.

but I wanted to do something fun. I picked up the ukulele, the banjo, and the cajon and
these are a total kick. I have the best time playing and singing again, and every now and

I can whistle any tune I can hear in my mind and hit all the notes.

This is my only musical talent

I think that's awesome you want to learn an instrument, and piano/keyboard is about a good of a place to start.

The only way you'd probably be wasting your time is you had super high expectations like selling out Carnegie Hall.

Otherwise, with all of the excellent resources out there, I see no reason you couldn't be decent within 6 months to a year. Provided, of course, that you do practice. Anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour would be sufficient. If you decide to go the route of learning on your own through books, dvds and online courses. I would advise to focus on the following first

- Basic music theory. Learn how to build chords and scales. Circle of fifths. Knowing these will immediately unlock so much.

- Ear training. Practice trying to recognize various intervals. Also, practice humming/singing a simple melody and then playing it back on the piano and vice versa.

Between all of that just try to learn some songs that you want to learn, have fun, and enjoy the journey.

Yeah, well played Sir.

My son took up guitar a couple years ago. He's now 20. Your video reminded me of him. Even though he's in college, he still has a bedroom at home, and also a second room for his guitar stuff. So, plenty of space so he's got room for his 3 guitars and 4 amps. But, his guitar room looks just like yours, LOL

He's messy, I'm not, but I just close the door so I don't have to look at it

It's not so bad now but I have a self quote regarding that.
