Vacation Photos - 05-26-2011, 11:54 AM

Here's a few photos from the week-long, 188-mile rafting trip my wife and I took through the Grand Canyon earlier this month. What a magnificent place, and what a powerful river. I've got plenty more pictures if y'all like these. I might even be able to get the size better for viewing.

It was great fun. Yeah, had the park shut down, I'd have been pissed.

Nice eye sjb. Of course it is hard to take a bad one, when beauty beams from every angle.

Glad you and your Misses enjoyed the trip. I certainly enjoyed the photos.

You're right. It's a hard place to take a bad picture.

You mean 5000 year-old crystallized lava, right?

We booked with a commercial outfitter, only about six months in advance. When the economy was stronger, even the commercial outfitters filled up two years in advance.

If you want to get a permit for a private expedition, however, good luck. They now use a weighted lottery system for private permits. One woman with our group told us she had abandoned her entry for a private permit after 12 years of trying without success.

So, unless you're willing to take your chances waiting years and years for a private permit, and are a very experienced whitewater rafter and outdoorsman ready to tackle a tough, unforgiving environment on your own, the commercial outfitters are the way to go.

I am a serious amateur photographer. And there are places you
can not make a mistake.

I remember Colorado Springs Winter Snow was my first experience. Three
rolls were all calendar quality. Garden of the Gods also in Colorado was
similar.

My last experience was The Exumas in the Bahamas, when I worked on
Andros Island. These were also film.

I acquired a nice Canon EOS a few years back. Now my shots are mostly
of my grandson.

Thanks again and put a couple more shots up. And what camera are you using?

Oh, when Dad was about 87 he asked if he could learn to shoot
shots like I did. Sure, and I acquired a modest 35 mm SLR camera. An
antique like Dad. He did it all without notes.

Dad had painted all his life, and he had the eye. His very first roll was quite
good. He especially liked depth of field and the ability to shoot through a
chain link fence. He took tons of shots of the new Toledo Bridge.

These were all taken with a Canon point-n-shoot digital--1400 elph, I think. Much different than back in the days I managed a camera shop and did some free-lance stuff with a Nikon F3 and a medium-format Mamiya. In fact, I still have the F3, motor drive, and 105mm micro-nikkor (sharpest lens I ever owned). I'll have to get it out some time. It's just that the little Canon fits in my shirt pocket, and is so convenient. Not to mention it also takes HD video.

Here's a couple more "relaxed" photos:
