I've been waiting for you to post these since you first mentioned you were going....now my computer is in the shop [something to do with a cooling problem] so I'm viewing on my mini-screen phone.....can't wait to see them on bigger screen.

The grand canyon and lake tahoe are my favorite places on earth....

Great pics.....I'm jealous....

Good job on the pics!

Hopefully you all know the true story of how The Grand Canyon was formed.............a visiting Scotsman dropped a quarter and it rolled down a rabbit hole

I just returned from doing this trip a second time, this time with my daughter. It was just as magnificent. Here we were on day two, about 40 miles in.

Why are you wearing an ID/lanyard thingy in the middle of the GC?

So they can ID your body if you drown.

To the OP: Went to Cataract canyon a few years ago. Always wanted to do the Grand Canyon but haven't yet. Thanks for the pics. They are great.

Looks like a dream vacation.

OK, tell us more of the details of the trip. 188 miles. How long did it take you from start to finish.

I imagine that they had regular check points to stop for lunch and over nighting.

What kind of food was provided.

Pitch pup tents or under the stars.

You know, that sort of detail.

I have a cousin in Minnesota that was a rafting guide. I believe he did some of his work, if you could call it work, on the west coast. Oregon. Lost touch with him many years ago.

Wow. Those pictures are really awesome! I've been in AZ for 20 years and have never gone to the Grand Canyon.

We're going to Hawaii in 10 days so that'll have to do for this year.

lol. it's not a lanyard ID. It's a waterproof camera pouch for my little Canon elph. Things do tend to get wet in the rapids.

It's not everyone's idea of a dream vacation, but it is for me. So much so that I've now done it twice. First with my wife, then with my daughter.

On this particular expedition, you spend 6 nights in the canyon, camped next to the river on sand beaches. On day 7, a helicopter flies down to the river at a place called Whitmore Wash, and flies you out to a ranch on the north rim. My daughter was thrilled when she drew the "shotgun" seat next to the pilot, who was a young woman about her age. They compared tattoos.

While the outfitter has tents available, whether to use them is personal choice, or dictated by the weather. When my wife and I went, we pitched a tent the first 3 nights because it was rainy and chilly, then slept under the stars when the weather broke. This time, my daughter and I never pitched a tent. A couple of nights, I never even unzipped my sleeping bag. Just layed on top of it. It was hot out there.

The food is awesome. Breakfast, lunch and dinner (with appetizers, and dessert). Everything from blueberry pancakes and omelets, to steak, salmon, and spaghetti with italian sausage. I brought a couple boxes of cabernet and some beer.

There are designated camp areas, but they are first come first served. No facilities of any kind, just sand. Nothing is left behind. You pee in the river, poop in a metal box and load it back on the raft. Lunch spots generally consist of any available spot of shade. The only "civilization" encountered during the entire 188 miles is Phantom Ranch, a ranger station at about the halfway point. We only stopped there this time to get fresh water, but there was none, due to some kind of piping problem. We filtered river water for the next 3 1/2 days.

The scope, scale, and downright awesomeness of seeing the length of the canyon from the bottom is hard to describe. It truly gives one a sense of one's place relative to the earth and the universe.

BTW, if anyone is so inclined, google an insect called a "tarantula hawk." I was stung on the bottom of my foot by one at camp on day 4 on the river. It is one badass bug.
