Olympic Decathlon? LMAO. How many Olympic Decathlon Tour members do you know? The actual decathletes have very few events each year and the sport itself has no reward for entering it except every four years someone will get a gold medal. All the best athletes don't even look to these type of competitions because they play baseball, basketball, and football.

By the way, the overwhelming choice here is basketball. No other sport demands more technical skill and hand eye coordination combined with all aspects of physical demand.

The skill side requires catching, throwing, dribbling, shooting, split second decision making, etc...

The endurance side requires sprinting, prolonged running, jumping, physical inside beating and banging, lateral movements, etc...

Professional "wrestling" is a rehearsed theatrical exhibition. Although most of them are extremely well conditioned athletes & acrobats, Olympic & collegiate wrestling require extremely high development in strength, endurance, flexibility, agility, & strategy. Given its low status, wrestlers are also highly, intrinsically motivated.

If the latter had been included, I suspect that it would have significantly skewed your results.

Yup.

I agree. Basketball at a high level requires the most athletic talent to play at a high level of the choices on this list.

I still think TDF style cycling is the most brutal of them all, hitting a baseball is the most technical skill of them all and football can be either simple (kicker) or terribly complex (quarterback/linebacker).

Just what exactly are we trying to figure out here ?

I chose soccer because the clock never stops. Unless you're benched for a while, the game keeps going and going and going and...

I think basketball is an excellent choice also for all the reasons vette mentioned.

Baseball and football aren't winners here. Ever seen a fat baseball player? Yes.

Ever seen a fat football player? Yes.

Ever seen a fat soccer player? Not so much.

Any sport that prohibits using their arms/hands should automatically be disqualified for most "athletic". Ever see an exclusive soccer player throw something? I have, and it's not pretty.

If we only look at middle infielders and center fielders in baseball, I would probably vote baseball.

Though, I've never played competitive hockey, but I could understand how hockey can be argued as most athletic.

Some want SUBJECTIVE opinions to be thought of as OBJECTIVE fact.

'course, that'll never happen...it can't in reality.

Yeah, I've seen ex pro soccer player Stan Bowles win a major darts competition lol. Following your thrust of argument all Olympic track and field athletes except javelin throwers, hammer throwers and discus throwers should also be disquailfied from being considered 'athletic'.

....and any sport that primarily involves throwing and carrying a ball shouldn't really be called "foot"ball

Gotta be right up there anyway.

Girlie sport.......shouldn't be anywhere near the rankings in athleticism, technical ability or fitness

Presumably you are talking about ice hockey as opposed to what most of the rest of the world calls hockey. No way can that be the most athletic, the skate blades are doing the work

Best for punch-ups, definitely

I think the ball sports which probably require the most stamina and cardio vascular fitness are gaelic football, australian rules football, soccer, rugby, squash, hurling and shinty. In the ball sports category American Football simply doesn't rate anywhere on the radar as regards the levels of stamina type fitness required to play it. It does however have demanding other fitness requirements of a nature and level that is all its own and it is chockful of many very athletic individuals.

To be serious for a minute the "most athletic" is far too loose and vague a concept with too many different interpretations of what it means to have any useful across the board analysis.

Not necessarily. If all of those T&F athletes throw like girls, then yes they are absolutely disqualified as athletes.

Word. (I agree.)

Though, you have to admit that you absolutely have to throw like a man to be considered an "athlete". Though, not sure you'd agree being European and all. :P

Before I learned self control I used to throw golf clubs with the best, once reaching a 40 yds distant lake with a putter in a parabolic flight path involving several artistic twists and somersaults in a high degree of difficulty category

Apart from that brief spell in history I shamefully admit that I can't throw for toffee therefore may well never have been a genuine athlete.

However I'll be competitive against most other 57 year olds at a decathlon involving a 100 metres sprint, best of 7 long jumps, number of squat thrusts completed in 60 seconds, best of 21 frames 8 ball American, best of 21 frames 8 ball uk style, best of 21 frames snooker, best of 21 goal kicks American, best of 21 goal kicks rugby, best of 21 penalty kicks soccer, and 72 holes stroke play on a parkland Championship Golf Course off the tips.....not that I'm picking and choosing my events at all
