Any of you guys ever run into the bar opponent on league night that when you play a safe he looks at you like you have lobsters coming out of your pants? Then he calls you a B1tch and tells you you're playing B1tch pool, or something similarly charming?

Yes, it's pretty common in bar leagues. For right or wrong, I usually play according to my opponents ability in leagues. If I'm playing a banger, I won't usually play safe. The outcome of league play is unimportant to me other than having a good time with people so I try not discourage new and beginner players too much with jail tight safeties and kick shots. When I play people that can run balls, it seems that their pocketing skills makes them more aware of defensive strategies and they'll have no problem leaving me hooked, so they're fair game.

I once played a guy way better than me for a few bucks and knowing that he could run out from anywhere, I did nothing but shoot safeties. Maybe pocket a ball or two but then play safe at the first opportunity, whether I could make another ball or not. A couple people watching were making comments like "that's chicken-sh!t pool", etc. I still lost, but I made'em work for it. Afterwards, the guy I was playing came up to me and said "that's how you f'in play pool!" and not to worry about what those other dudes were saying. Since, I've watched pros play safe, not because they had no shot, but simply because they don't see a run out. I think in pretty much all sports, at the highest levels, good defense almost always bests good offense.

I think I might have broken my own record for quickest 8 ball match. 5-1 in 11 innings with 1 safety I think...Vikings were still playing and it was a very close game coming down to the end. No break and runs but I did kick in my last ball before the 8 in a game to get out...felt good!

NAPA laggers choice last night. Won the lag and choose 9-ball. I needed 3 in a 3-7 race. I lost 1-7 and didn't do anything to get that one: my opponent was on his way to a second break-and-run and left himself tough on the 9 ball which he missed.

We had extra money in the table so played a couple more games, I lost both of those and if you count the 2 8-ball games before our match, I lost 11 games to the same guy.

On a postiive note, my other teammates won and that puts us in first place.

Last night in a VNEA league match, a teammate's (Bob) opponent knocked the 8 in on his first shot. All the other balls remained on the table. Bob takes a shot and misses. I tell Joe that the 8 is gone, so he tells Bob. The guy who shot lost the game is getting ready to shoot when Bob tells him he lost in the last shot.

Was this coaching?
Is there anyway that a rerack would be called for since Bob shot after the game was lost?
Since no balls were made, it was a 10-0. What would the score be if 2 solids were off the table and it is still open? 10-2 or 10-0?

Obviously, the game could not continue as is, since the game ball was pocketed early.

Nothing that happened after the 8-ball dropped matters; the game was over at that point.

I don't play VNEA so if they do this differently... they smoke crack. :)

In NAPA (and I think APA), answering questions about the rules is not considered coaching. Telling players that they lost because they dropped the 8 early would fall under that category.

It would have been interesting to watch the game to see who noticed it first. Our guy is a good player, so I was surprised that he did not see it right away.

The other guy probably only thinks 2 or 3 shots ahead, and will deal with what they have if they get that far.

I'm going to amend my previous post:

The NAPA rules for what is not coaching are:
The following are NOT considered coaching:
a. Wishing your teammate good luck.
b. Reminding your teammate to chalk up.
c. Reminding your teammate to call their pocket.
d. Telling your teammate a foul has occurred.
e. Telling your teammate that he has ball-in-hand.
f. Answering or asking a rule question.
g. Complimenting your teammate for good play.
h. Giving your teammate advice when it is NOT their turn. This is considered “sideline coaching” and is legal, however, ALL sideline coaching must cease
immediately after your opponent’s turn has ended.
NOTE: Telling your teammate which category of balls he or she has is a foul and the incoming shooter receives cue ball in hand

So reminding people about rules (esp. about double-hitting) should probably be considered coaching. I do, however, remind players about the Push rule in 9 and 10 ball because most people don't remember it and I always feel like a d-bag if I'm playing a weaker player and they clearly don't remember it and might want to use it.

New Cue

About a month ago a teamate came to me to help find a new cue. Apparently keeping sticks in your truck in the Texas heat is bad for shafts, who knew? :sorry:. Anyway, I found her a lightly played Allen Green cue here on AZ and she has yet to lose. Including Tri Cup, I think she is 9-0 and full of confidence. Besides being a shameless plug for the cue maker, my point is, it is awesome to watch a lower ranked player (she is a 4 in both 8 and 9) full of self confidence because of a new stick. Thanks Allen.

The power of positive thinking is amazing.

Play in a CCS league in St. Catharines Ontario. We are a competitive team, finished 5th out of 14 teams last year. One of our players left at the end of the season and while it would be great to replace them with top tier talent that isn't always possible.

A lady in one of our other leagues had been working on her game the last six months or so and when she said she was looking for a team she joined ours.

She wins about 1 in 4 matches but is improving, willing to play defensive pool when necessary and uses her timeout well. (not just that she does what she is "told" but that she is willing to listen to advice and not just line up the easiest hit).

Anyway last night she won three out of five games and made six balls in each of her losses.

The thing i was most proud of is two of her games she won on the 8 ball (each player having a couple of shots each at it), while she missed a couple of tough shots, didn't give up and leave a hanger. She played safe pool when needed and was rewarded both times.

I've been playing with a lot of confidence since I started using a new stick. I've been on a nice win streak since then, too.

i thought i would give this a bump from page 6.:D

last night double jeapordy. i faced a 7 in 8 ball. he won the lag and broke dry. i ran the table, uh oh....the cue ball glances off my opponents ball and scratches. damn ! the rest of the match was not much better but i did manage to win 2 racks losing 5-2.

we face each other in 9 ball also.1st rack..he breaks and runs 5 balls ...i run out. 2nd rack i break and run 5 balls and he runs out. we stay pretty much even until the next to last rack. he breaks and runs.....last rack he breaks and runs to the 9 and gets his required points.what is the old saying ... you cant win from the chair. damn.

Played an APA 9-ball match for the first time in 5 weeks. I played a SL5 and won 19-1 :)

I made 100% of my shots, but broke dry in one rack and he kicked two rails out of a jam up safe and made an excellent shot. I got the rolls all night!

Had a good night last night in 8-ball.... Played a friend who is also SL5, won the lag, then had a break and run, capped by a nice carom for the ball before the 8. (Of course we won't go into the fact that if I hadn't messed up position I wouldn't have had to even try the carom....damn this game would be easier if I stayed on the right side of the ball, heh heh).

We also had a nice chess match in one game....he hung the 8 in a corner, with one of my balls right in front of it. I had another ball on the table as well, we went back and forth, him fouling, me trying to set it up for him to try and sneak by but hit mine.... I ended up messing up after about 6 or 7 back-and-forths....it was fun tho. Far different than the usual stuff.

I ended up winning 4-2. The team finally won the week as well, 7-6, first time in a while. Hopefully the start of our furious comeback :p

I'm an apa 6/7. Have won 6 out of 7 8 ball matches this session, 4 against 7's, 2 against 6's. Last match was a rack less win against a 7. I'm number 1 in mvp right now for 6 and 7's.

I recently moved up to 7 in 9 ball and have been disappointed a bit in my performance. Have been getting close but losing several close matches. I'm disappointed because my shot making has been very good but I've screwed myself with some stupid cb positioning and a couple of outright ignorant mental mistakes giving my opponents bih. In retrospect, I realized I'm often trying to get too perfect with position ending up with no position. I've also been too aggressive at times when I could have played a few more safeties. I did have one really good night though when I came back, against a strong 8, from down 44-21 by running 23 straight balls over 3 racks and beating him 55-50. It felt even better because the guy is a bit of a ***** and sore loser.

A week ago, I had a match in Masters league I thought I should win. I played absolutely awful, the worst I can remember playing in over a year. It was like I was in a haze mentally. I knew I was jumping up, hitting too hard and a host of other bad things. It was embarrassing and frustrating. I shook my opponents hand, apologized for playing so poorly and felt ready to quit the game. I sat in the man cave at home afterwards, smoking a cigar, and thought perhaps I should just quit for a few weeks. After an hour of mentally whining and being a puss, I went downstairs and started practicing some drills with the video camera. I started doing a disciplined PSR on every practice shot. My only thought when shooting was hold perfectly still and stay down. After several days of this, I was playing better than ever. I'd like to think this horrible match turned out to be a great thing for my game as I tightened up a few weaknesses substantially. This match just happened to have all the weaknesses occur simultaneously to the max. I'll never forget the feelings I had after that match and hope to never feel that badly again.

APA 9-ball tonight, I drew a SL3, did what I'm supposed to do, won 15-5. Gave him too many opportunities, that was a little disappointing, but not a bad night. After last Tuesday s win, its something to try and build on...

i played in our 8 ball top gun tourny yesterday. i feel good about how well i played.

1st match ; won 4-1 vs a 5
2nd match ; won 4-1 vs a 5
3rd match, won 4-3 vs a 5
4th match ; lost 4-3 vs a 5
5th match ; won 4-1 vs a 5
6th match ; won 4-3 vs a 5

made it to the semi finals on the losers side....a win sends me to the regionals in nashville. i looked at the bracket and see i play the winner of a 4 : who i have beat every time i have played him " and a very tough 5 " who i have a very serious rivalry with although we are friendly to each other." we hate to lose to each other and i think our record is about 50/50 facing each other with him knocking me outa last years top gun. i knocked him outa the one before that.

well i waited for their match to get over and was getting myself in focus. when it was over and heard my name called i went to the table and was suprised to find out i was facing the 4. how the hell did that happen i wondered. ?

well i found out real quick how he beat one of the toughest 5's in town besides me.

when he was not firing in every thing a 4 should fire in he just flailed away with reckless abandonment and something always fell. i kept telling myself shoot what i can and play safe when i need to....i thought his luck was bound to run out sooner or later and the law of averages would catch up with him. well his luck never ran out during my match and i lost 3-0.

i played 7 safes the 3rd rack and am still shacking my head at how he won that one. his last 2 balls and 3 of mine...plus the 8 were in a cluster around the foot spot. he could see about a 1/2 inch of one of his balls and he flails away at warp speed.

some how both of his balls managed to find pockets to fall in with the cue ball hauling ass towards a corner pocket but hits the tip and just rattles and hangs there. i swear if you just so much as breathed on it it would fall. he just grinned ear to ear after the out come of that shot...called the 8 in the corner and finally put me out of my misery. later me and the 5 who i thought i would be facing were talking and we both agreed he never should have beat either one of us but we both agreed shit happens in this game we love.

thinking about playing in the 9 ball top gun today. hope the frig he aint in it lol.
