Ronnie Allen Gaff Shaft mystery question

Bingo, you beat me to it. I hit balls with his special shaft. Must have been about 15-16 oz. Ronnie would play good players One Pocket even up with just the break and shoot one handed with the shaft. He killed them playing that way. One time he told me that the break was worth four balls to him. He was f'ck'g Awesome! Even Allen Hopkins told me the other day that no one played like Ronnie. Hoppy beat just about everybody at One Pocket (Bugs, Shorty, Grady, Steve Cook) but he could never beat Ronnie. He said that Ronnie would have killed Efren, so there's someone who agrees with me. I've never seen anyone play the game like Ronnie. He shot shots that I've never seen before or since. Allen H. said much the same thing. He said Ronnie came with shots from nowhere that turned the whole game around.

Was Ronnie still playing when Efren came to the United States?

I saw him play with only the shaft here in Tulsa once. What he did was put a roll of coins, dimes iirc, in his hand and butted the shaft up against it. He tortured the guy.

The roll of coins was what I remembered also , never saw him do it , just shown it. I did run into a guy that had a Budweiser Logo cue I think it was , but it was actually made by Tascarella.
I had one of those 5 piece cues with all the chrome weights back in the 80s , so I used to take that in and make a big show of putting it all together and if someone started talking to me I would tell them my brother was state champion and I could usually beat him. ' They couldn't grab a cue fast enough. I would never bet more than 1 to 5 dollars and I would win the 5 s and lose the 1s . It worked all over the city

Parica was an absolute monster jacked up one handed also.

" When Efren came to U S ,
He didn't play 1 P ….
Apparently Efren was playing in Chicago and got introduced to 1 P there....
I was watching a match on you tube- and The bank pool specialist Freddie" was talking with Billy Incardona about Efren....Efren not wanting to take intentional foul-
"Either way-
I sure wish to of seen Efren nd Ronnie IN THIER PRIME playing 1 P

Ronnie was 16 years older than Efren...pretty well a generation older...
...and Ronnie’s game slipped a lot as he got to 50....result of a hard life style.

Yes. The story was Ronnie was spotting Efren some balls and robbed him.
A year later after Efren came back, he robbed Ronnie.

The ONLY time I saw Ronnie try to match up against Efren was at Hard Times La Habra. Ronnie was asking the owner Wayne to stake him. Efren was giving him 10-7. This was back in '97. Wayne didn't stake him, no game. Ronnie would be close to 60 then though.
Saw Ronnie again at The Riviera the year after ( PBT World 8-Ball event ) .
Ronnie was absolutely the most charismatic pool player I ever saw.
People loved talking to him and he loved talking.
I was standing next to him while he was talking to some people.
Johnny Archer gave him the Betty Davis eyes b/c Johnny was playing and could hear him talk.
I ran into Ronnie after the match and ribbed about Johnny giving him the eyes. Ronnie just laughed it off. He said players by then were sissies. He said during his time, talk and noise were all part of the game.
Sadly, nobody has made a movie or even a book about his life.

Deanoc, John Henderson is correct. Ronnie told me that Ernie Guiterrez (Gina) made his shafts for him. This particular shaft weighed 14.5 oz.

Efren couldn't spell One Pocket when he first came here and Ronnie beat him easily at the Orange County Sports Arena in the mid 80's. Fast forward a few years and Efren gave Ronnie 10-8, 9-7 at Hard Times and beat Ronnie. Wayne staked that game too. Maybe a year later Efren offered Ronnie 10-7 but like Joey said Ronnie couldn't get staked. I still say that Ronnie in his prime was a better One Pocket player although many disagree with me. Ronnie knew more moves and actually kicked better than Efren, especially multiple rails. And no one ever shot off angle combos better than Ronnie. NO ONE! Two balls, three balls, made no difference.

I love Ronnie’s quote when somebody asked how he and Efren would come out in both of their prime. He said ‘He might beat me, but he would be too tired to spend the money’. I also think that RA at his best would have beat Efren at his best. He had a little more ‘Gamesmanship’, and as you and I know, Ronnie found a way to win in seemingly impossible situations time after time.
