Is one pocket only popular in the US?

I suck at pool!!!! I’m better than 99% of pool players but 1pocket and bank pool with handicap I have a chance!!! It’s a beautiful thing

To be fair, it seems to me that 1p is only played by short stops, semi-pros and pros in the US unless you find a niche community. I don’t know if any run of the mill tournament players and leaguers that play it.

1P is more popular than ever. There's not very many places that don't play the game. My most recent travels to Spokane and Coeur d' Alene have almost no 1P and NYC its hard to get a game. There's plenty of 1P in LA, PHX, Vegas, Chicago, St. Louis, Florida, Atlanta, New Orleans, Baltimore/DC, Philly, Pittsburg, Detroit. OK, I know i left out a bunch of places:)

One pocket seems to be less chess than shredding your opponent between pool and the bet. I enjoy rolling the balls around as an "intellectual" challenge but that's only because a game rarely comes up. If it was common, I'd get bored with it soon enough.

That might be the climate in Europe and Asia. They're obsessed with skill and marksmanship, not the grind; at least not that grind.

I disagree. Or at least you're not playing it the way we do over here.

It's popular in Holland, I can attest to that.

Roger that.

Several years ago Gail and I were planning a trip to Amsterdam and I was trying to sync up our trip so I could play in the 1pocket leg of the Deurne City Classic. I tried emailing the room and tournament web site and never got an answer so we booked the trip and missed the event by a couple of weeks.

I was referring to the ways Reyes, Alex P., Scott Frost etc... play. Ball wide open, more intentionals than a police cell block. Sure they make the odd masterstroke but that's not chess. It's barely pool. It's simply waiting on the money.

I did enjoy what I watched of Filler/Chohan firing at each other but had other things to do. I'll go back for that one later.

I play dumb pocket myself. No need or desire to play those guys. Simple lockups, wrong side breakshots to run some balls no fancy banks, lotsa takeouts - I love those.

Ever been to DCC? Seems like all the Euro guys can't wait to match up at 1p. Its fairly new to them but they seem to love it. If you find 1p boring you obviously aren't betting enough. The game was designed from jump-street to be a cash proposition. Greatest gambling game ever invented imo.

Only DCC is the stuff posted on Youtube. Frankly anybody there is bound to get roped into some kind of action. That's why they went right? Probally the atypical Euro player. Top hundred guys doing graduate work :)

I gave up my noob action pass in the 70s. Just never had the discipline to trudge through the grind just to have some dummy's money. :D

How would you know if you've never been? All the top Euro players are playing 1p now. Playing 1p without something riding on it is a fairly boring exercise. Playing for nothing tends to make one really bold compared to the possibility of actually losing something. I guess people do it but not anywhere near my home range. Best game for chuckles is 14.1

Yeah, Niels Feijen, after finishing second one year in the DCC 1-pocket, told me he had only played the game at the Derby. I also recall having a chat with Chris Melling shortly before the DCC 1-pocket event began. I asked him if he was going to the player's meeting. His answer was simple enough "I have to, I don't know the rules." He had a top ten finish that year!

As you say, though, once exposed to the game, most of them seem to enjoy it a lot.

My take on high stakes pool is not for the risk or anything macho. I wanna steal. (I have no qualms about saying that - it's just a fantasy) I used to hang out in person to soak in "real pool" but the hunger just isn't in me. I watch the heavies on video for the pool. My pool improved vastly without all the concerns. Win win AFAIC.

In my area one pocket is very popular.
One room in my area has 4 tables dedicated to the game.
Some guys I know only play one pocket and they can play all of the games well.
They just dedicate themselves to one pocket.

You’re the exception that proves the rule just to illustrate how few and far between casual 1p players are.

I definitely replied to this only speaking to my immediate circle
it's true 1 doesn't rival 8 or 9 in terms of general popularity
but I should give credit where it's due, there is 1p in ~seattle
I'm not deep in the scene, but some folks here dig it pretty good
and I'm glad to see that's the case in many other places

All the videos from the Philippines are of 10 ball or 9 ball but they must play one pocket because some of the best in the world are from the Philippines.

Your temperament makes for an excellent One Pocket opponent. I'd love to play some with you

I am sure you would loose, again your pretending to know what you do not know. Are you like some sideshow Gypsey mind reader, I think not just a person who thinks they know what they do not.

I would certainly loose. Fast and, in fact

Though One Pocket may not be very popular outside the USA it is gaining in many European countries and Canada. I know this to be true because of the numbers of books I have personally sold to these countries. The Netherlands, Poland, Finland, Switzerland, Germany, and of course, Canada.
There are quite a number of very fine One Pocket players in these countries. Without naming names, there are several very accomplished players who though not known as "One Pocket specialist" are still very strong at the game.
One reason you may not hear much about them is the sparse number of tournaments here in the USA and their moderate pay scale. The overhead for anyone coming from Europe to the US for a tournament just doesn't justify the trip.
That said, in my humble opinion, the game is so great and demanding of all cueing skills it will continually grow in popularity throughout the world. Give it time. The game will have its day.

Thanks,

Tom
