Incorrect Grip?

So I’ve been playing for about 8 years. I’m noticing in the past year my grip has been allowing the cue to slide through my hand every single shot I play. And now that I’ve switched from leather to linen it’s much more noticeable to me. I feel like when I try to do the “v grip” it’s way too tight for me. So I’m just looking for some help on what I should do. I’ve been analyzing Shane Van Boening, Jayson Shaw, Darren Appleton and none of them let the cue slip through ever. I’ll attach pictures of my grip. There’s always light between my webbing and the butt, and I always let the cue go on the follow through and it slips through.

Some very great players used something called a "slip stroke" - so letting the cue pass through your grip hand to some degree is not really a negative aspect. Are you trying to correct a real problem or a perceived problem? The only real reasons to change a grip are that either it is too uncomfortable to play or the grip is not allowing the cue to execute the desired stroke- is it one or both of these problems? if not - don't do anything different.

Have you tried this snooker style or is
this what you mean by v grip?

If you hold it with the thumb and first finger
it should not slip. Those pictures
look like this is what your doing,
I'm not sure why it slips. I use this grip
and the cue does not slide in my hand.

One thing I will add is that when I was working
on my own grip, learning to trust my arm
and take the hand out of the equation was difficult.
Especially speed control.
No matter how I grip the cue as long as I used my bicep
to move the cue and not my hand the cue didn't slip.
Loose relaxed hand and using the big muscles(bicep&tricep) to move the cue.
Like a putting stroke in golf. If you let the hands get
involved your fked:)

I did answer your question and offered possibly life-saving advice on top. You're welcome.

Julian

Total garbage. I normally do not respond to back-and-forth, but I am curious about something.

What did you really think would happen with a comment about the man's weight? I am really curious to read your thoughts, because we both know his health was the last thing on your mind when you stated said physical observation.

I think sometimes my hand is a lot more involved than it ever should be, I definitely don't let my arm move the cue 100% of the time. That's good helpful advice, I appreciate it. Did you basically just watch Barry's grip videos and try to remap your muscle memory in your stroke to just use your arm muscles while trying to keep your hand cradled?

I watched other players. Read on Dr. Daves website
www.drdavebilliards.com. Every book and google search
on grips I could find.
I tried each different style for 2 weeks to a month.
I landed on Barry Stark style snooker grip because
it was the most consistent for me.

In the beginning I practiced it for a few weeks then put
it under pressure gambling and playing tournaments.
Under pressure I would grip it too tight or too lose
because I didn't trust it yet.
I stuck with it and found the hand naturally opens and
closes if I learned to trust my arm to do the work
and not think about what my hand was doing.

My speed control suffered, i would hit it way too
hard, grip it to tight and send the cue off course,
try to be loose and let the cue do the work and on hard
struck shots the cue would fly out of my hand.

If I had to venture a guess it was about 6 months to
a year before I was stroking the cue without thinking
about what my arm/ hand was doing.
In time I learned to trust it and do it unconsciously.

Ok, I think what I've been experiencing was that I was using my hand to stroke the cue and therefore I have been using a couple fingers flexed and then I let go to make sure the cue goes straight. This has been the most helpful advice I've gotten on the grip, hopefully I can put it to use. Thanks. I'm going for a jog, see you later!

Some people just do this naturally.

And now that I’ve switched from leather to linen it’s much more noticeable to me.

linen has lower friction/stiction to your fingers.

The only thing I see in your pictures is that you have a touch of tension in the fingers.

I agree with all of your statements. The finger tension is a weird thing that I somehow developed in the past year that I am going to fix starting tonight. Thanks for the reply

The Grip is one of the Culprits

I like to keep the back of my hand & the flat part of my wrist & lower arm, all on the same PLANE. I can feel that in my stroke & that's how I use my arm in the stroke. For Me, I think that eliminates any rotation of the grip.

I also do other things, but I can't see much in the photos, except from the back. Do you do any videos of your stroke..?

I stream/record sessions on occasion. I just took those photos from a recording of the other day. I could do a more condensed stroke analysis video tonight when I go practice and put it up.

On an irrelevant side note I have the break rak in my closet, pretty cool invention I must say. Sure beats walking around the table to get all of the balls and messing around with the rack every time you want to do break practice.

First off, thanks for the mention of the BreakRAK & your kind words.

A straight stroke is the pathway to winning in Competition. Most of us like winning & lots of us practice, but not as much or as well as we should. The folks that are determined to make it in this Sport, are definitely committed. Good Luck to you.....

Nothing wrong with letting the cue slip.
Just ask Efren.

You want to know why pool is so low on the class scale

its not classy like golf

it is not pure like baseball

just read afew post on here,it would take an idiot
to take his wife or children to a place where language like this is used

you want to see why no one wants to sponsor pool tournaments

just read this trash

not that it is the only one, just specimen

feel free to REPLY WITH the severity of the invective
to my observations

i am expecting it

The same could be said about why more people don't contribute to this site. A new member was asking for advice and went so far as to post pics (instead of asking how) and someone just had to be an asshole. That same asshole is representing pool in his area.....so ask him why pool is so low class scale.

Ask Catalin why no one wants to sponsor pool.

Seriously, Catalin made a conscious decision to respond to a post and insult a new forum member when they could have just not responded at all.

So you're right, it would take an idiot to visit a pool room where Catalin was a patron.

The man who ran 526, let the cue slide .
The man who ran 626 said , you couldn't hit a spot on the floor more accurately if you poked at it instead of letting the cue drop on it.

As he pointed out, he's not Efren. For the vast majority of players, letting the cue stick slip during the stroke is broken, stupid, and goofy.

I think there is no player in the top 50 pool players now who lets the cue stick slip, and I'm pretty sure you could go through the top 500 snooker and carom players and not find one who uses a slip stroke. Nearly all carom players use rubber wraps.

Not a problem if it's comfortable for you. Some Filipino players let the cue slip forward to draw. You should lose weight though.

Julian, If you don't realize how impolite you are, you have a worse problem then you might know.
