Spalted Tamarind question

Does/should un-stabilized spalted tamarind need to be cored for strength? Looking to use this for both the forearm and the handle.

Pretty light - so I thought I'd ask the pros.

Thanks!

Hi Ken
Even if I didn't core everything, I would core it.

I think it would be beneficial to have the piece stabilized. Spalting can make wood punky.

I recently acquired a new batch of spalted tamarind and a some of the pieces are very heavy and hard. Over 50 lbs per square foot. Not sure why because they have nice figure but I plan to use them without stabilizing. Coring of course.

Most important. Just because you core it, doesn't mean you don't have to season it. Do a turn, put it away. Etc, etc, etc.
Season your cores to before you start to use them.

Turn it round.
Drill 1/2 hole end to end.
Get stabilized. Inside and outside get stabilized better with drilled hole.

Turn again to correct the warp.
Bore the hole for final size .

What setup to you use to turn the warp out with a 1/2 inch hole at the ends full of crystalized resin?

If you're going to core it anyway the outer part you will use should be plenty solid.

You just glue a center-drilled maple discs to cover the hole.
