9' table in 18' room

I had this discussion with my good friend, adviser, consultant, teacher (what else?). That would be Mr. TRW aka Tom Wirth. The plan is to have the foot end a few more inches (1 or 1.5) from the wall and use a shorter cue (54") if the cue ball is frozen on the head rail. Curious how homeowners handled 18' or slightly shorter rooms. Did you center the table or offset slightly. Thanks, Frank

If the table is centered, you have exactly 58" from the cushion nose to the wall, at each end. Elevate the butt of the cue 45 degrees, you gain another 3".

I agree with Tom; move the table 2-4" (depending on your stroke preference) toward the head end, and free up the foot end. Just remember, if you are frozen to the foot rail, how much stroking distance are you actually going to need? If the ball is off the rail an inch or two, how much would you need? Consider cue elevation, as well.

I have an 8 footer in a 17" room with a similar problem.

I solve this problem by allowing the CB to be moved up to the 1st diamond on the original shooting line to shoot at the already called ball in the already called pocket.

I do have a short cue, but the above is a better solution for me.

I think I would rather have a bar table than to try and play on a 9 in that size room. My first house the room was 20’ and with the ball frozen you could almost just bump the wall with a flat cue.

I think that’s the minimum. I know me and if I were constantly bumping into walls I wouldn’t play much and it would be a waste. Would rather play on a bar table and just get really good at that, lol

Not a bar table player. Every size table is fun. But It’s 9’ or no foot.

I had a buddy with a wall pinch point and the rule at his house was you had to use the same cueing angle as where you bumped, but you could move the cb up to gain backswing allowance.

I understand that...But 1pocket goes totally against that. Leaving the opponent frozen is everything. Anyway thanks for the replies...just curious how people handle 9' table placement. I'll live with possibly making a 1' table placement adjustment or simply use a 54-56" cue. Would have a few custom shafts made.

Personally, I just plain wouldn't do it. It isn't just about those 2% of shots where you'd need a short cue or hit the wall, it's the 40% of shots where you'd be thinking about how close the wall was.

I understand the strong desire for a full 9' table but if I couldn't have at least 15' x 19' I'd consider an oversize 8 or standard 8.

Sent from the future.

Let the guys walk you in off the ledge. They have your best interest at heart. Think about your wife. When you get pissed off, you'll take it out on her.

Hell yeah.... get pissed off at her and go buy a new cue or car or pool table or go to casino. Gotcha Box.

I agree with this and the others who suggest just getting a table that fits. In the end you are going to be happier (and get more use out of it) by getting a table that fits with proper clearance, regardless of what size table that ends up having to be, than you will be with constantly (and it will indeed be constantly, or sure will seem like it) having to move balls, shoot with short awkward cues, use altered game rules, short stroke, think about walls during shots, shoot at awkward jacked up angles, etc.

Set yourself up for frustration and invariably all you really ended up doing was acquiring a really expensive laundry folding table for the wife.

Dude, I love the way you think!

Thanks Box. And thanks for your support. Friends don’t let friends by anything less than 50x100. It’s 9 feet or no feet. Occupy GoldCrown or Diamond. Anything less would be uncivilized.

Some of the posters here are onto something. Maybe I should skip the table and give the money to my wife. Opinions?

If it's a curtain wall, cut an opening. If it's a bearing wall, build a header. If it's poured concrete or block, bang your head against it. It will feel good when you stop.

Cinder block. I fold here. Maybe I’ll simply get a bumper pool table. Should fit ok.
