don't think I've ever seen that before
v. uchigaki, about 50 minutes in

I prefer a good kick to the jump tactic
but jumping takes skill too
I appreciate the timing on this one

51:00 is the place to start.

He cleared the blocker by half a ball. The cue ball bounced 3-4 times before hitting the 5 and lost height with each bounce so it did not go off the table as feared by Mark Wilson. I think the same shot on one hop does leave the table.

Being an Old Curmudgeon™, I'd rather they did away with jump cues or at least enforced the prohibition on phenolic tips.

That was the match where Ko P-Y posted the highest TPA (.953) in all of the streamed matches for that year's event but lost the match when he broke dry at hill/hill and Uchigaki ran out (finishing at .891).

I've long considered the Taiwanese to be the best in the world at executing jump shots.

I was just about to mention that. I don't remember a bigger discrepancy in TPA where the lower TPA won.

Here Big Ko does commentary and critique of his younger self in this breakout match v Dennis O more than 10 years ago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axXYKLkeVzI

Thanks, I enjoyed the commentary one. He gave some interesting insight into his pattern play principles and how he handles nervousness.

As a note for others, you can turn on English subtitles, if they aren't on automatically. Unfortunately, they go by a bit quickly sometimes. You can skip back 5 seconds using the left arrow key.

I think on the Western hemisphere, the further North you go the more jumping seems to be an accepted practice....

I'll call that shot, the one I did on Wednesday...lol. Of course that's only because I play such bad shape I need to be able to hop over a ball or two often enough.

IMO, jumping with precision is way more impressive than kicking. Lets be honest about that particular situation Ko found himself in. The only excuses for missing that shot would have been either bad form or a flat out miss. He was a good distance away from the ball he needed to clear and had tons of landing space afterward. Launching the cue ball of the table on that shot would have been laughable. Compare that to say a kick off the bottom rail (for argument's sake). Ko would have played the averages and most likely played the second rail just to increase the odds of ending up safe if he thinned the OB too much. Kicks are about averages, rarely does precision come into play. I know the masses who feel like jumping is cheapening the game will roast me alive, but I really do think it adds a dynamic that increases the entertainment value. Shouldn't even have to mention the importance it places on accurate safety play.

Sure equipment makes a basic non-controlled jump easy. Who says kicking a ball off one rail just to make contact is difficult...?

Flame on....
