I have a 1 after my notifications and there are no new messages.

Click on it. It's probably just a "read receipt" that shows when someone reads iTrader feedback you left for them. You should be able to delete it.
That is not it. When you click on it, it goes back to the message box with a 1 beside the unread messages but there is nothing there.

That's a strange one. I too have a message of sorts I can't find a way to clear. I got an invite to join a group which I have no interest in. Does anyone know how I decline the invite and clear the invite message out of my user cp?

This has come up a couple other times. If it is the same situation, it is spam with a weird date that sorts at the very bottom of your inbox.
Scroll down and you should see an unread message with no date or some funky date. Delete it and you should be good to go.

none of that works on mine I figured one of the moderators could do something, but it really doesn't matter that much.
