If you clicked "Rep", that's the correct button. After you click that, you can choose, "I approve", or "I disapprove". The default is "I approve", so you probably did it correctly.

Now, if he goes and clicks the rep button on his own post, he will see either a green dot, a red dot, or a grey dot. I gave you some rep for your post, so go ahead and try it. The green and red are self-explanatory. The grey one happens when a new user gives you good rep.

So it could be that you didn't have any rep yet, making the rep you give, gray.
