314-2 shaft with hard tip question

i finally got used to predator again and i dont want to go back....on the other hand i would like to be able to break with my playing cue without having my tip mushroom or lose shape often.

I know that the inside of predators ferrule is hollow and if you see the hit in slow motion the tip squishes between the ferrule and cue ball. Does predators ferrule flex in any way at contact or is it just lighter than a normal ferrule. if it doesnt flex couldnt i just hollow out any ferrule and make it lighter to reduce deflection...? of course it would have to be strong material.

if you are using a harder tip does that make a predator deflect more than normal or put more strain on predators fragile ferrule. and does this have anything to do with the original 314-2 recalled shafts with exploding ferrules. is it the same material as the old just thicker. or a new material all together. how did they fix them?

I don't think that predator uses hollow ferrules - they are threaded and glued most likely but they aren't hollow as far as I know.

What is hollow on a Predator shaft is the last 5 inches of the shaft - measured from the ferrule. That is what causes less deflection plus the lighter material ferrule - hence the shaft's end mass is lower and it won't deflect so much.

I don't think that the tip's hardness has much to do with deflection - I mean there must be some effect but not so major.

The ferrules exploding on the shafts from last summer was due to a bad batch of ferrules whereas the ferrule material was manufactured badly with flaws in it - that was what caused the problem but as far as I know they are still using the same - so called - 'Titan' material for the ferrules.

Finally a question, Do you like playing with a hard tip? Because constantly breaking even with a hard tip the tip will get harder by time even if you avoid it from mushrooming.

Also, if you are using the soft break technique then you can use almost any tips you want imo as a soft break is sometimes only as strong as one medium/fast stun or draw shot.

P.S.: I was using the barcues for breaking with the exception of only 3 months and they worked fairly well for me :)

Best Break cue I ever had was a old Joss SP with one of the original 314s on it. I preferred it to the BK1 and other cues made specifically for breaking.
Never had a problem with mushrooms (Triangle tips get pretty hard anyways), lick your finger and rub the edges of your tip from time to time to increase its rigidity.

Here is a picture of a Z2 shaft's end for you.

thanks guys. i just remember a guy in our pro shop trying to take a predator ferrule down and it ended up being hollow in the middle and he had to send it back and get it replaced. i dont remember why this was being done i just know it happened. so i was sceptical about breaking with it.

I am not breaking like svb my break is between 20-23 mph. which is average i guess. about as hard as earl strickland or jeanettle lee. when i try and kill it i lose control of the cue ball. (of course)

i have seen people say that they had a predator shaft made with an ivory ferrule. anyone know about this?

What would be the point of that? Radial consistency + ivory ferrule, I suppose. But it would counteract the low deflection, plus it would be another material that people would not recommend breaking hard with.

In any case if you wanted to do that, any cuemaker could do that.

yeah it didnt seem to make alot of sense to me but i saw someone on here with one. i dont remember who though. imo predator shafts quality has gone downhill since they sold out to overseas. its easier to see where to wood is joined together and i have seen so many more recalled or returned shafts now
