9 Ball Rules Question

Probably a stupid question but I took about 15 years off from pool and gambling so I forgot some of the terminology...

If someone gives you the 7 for example, does that mean you win by pocketing any of the last 3 balls (7, 8 or 9) Or does it just mean the 7?

The 7-out would be the 7, 8, and 9 Tim.
