An idea for AZ Billiards Forums

Still crazy after all these years

The other day I was thinking about all the great content accumulated here on the AZ forums over the years. Yes, a lot of the content is babble and bickering, however there are many excellent discussions and suggestions on the various games of pool. A couple that come to mind are the Kicking Academy threads posted by Deadaim, and the "how would you play this shot" threads which I believe SJM initiated and many have started. Wouldn't it be great if there were some kind of indexing to these threads ? So, my idea is to create an index of 'interesting' threads, possibly by subject. This effort would not index all 9800 threads, I'm guessing that of these threads only 1000 - 1500 might be considered 'interesting'. The categories that might be considered for indexing could start like this :

- 8-Ball Shots and Strategies
- 9-Ball Shots and Strategies
- 14.1 Shots and Strategies
- 1Pocket Shots and Strategies
- Kick Shots
- Bank Shots
- Stroke Techniques
- Aiming (OK, maybe not :)
- Break Shot Discussions
- Tournament Preparation
- Mental Aspects of Pool Discussions

Originally I thought of going through a few hundred posts and creating an index to the interesting ones, then post it here for discussion. However it likely makes more sense to get some feedback, and possibly a few volunteers to help first :) .

Whadaya think ? Does this idea have any merit ? Any improvements to suggest ? Any volunteers to help out ? Any ideas about how the ongoing threads might be added to an index ? Any idea about how to present an index within the forums (maybe Mike is the only one who can answer that one). Anyway, it's an idea I've been thinking about and would love to hear what others have to say.

I think we should have an archive for old topics like the DCC, WPC, Joss Tour Finale, et cetera.

And more space for PMs.

PULEEEEZE....not together. I get the front cover and she can have her favorite spot...the "tail" end.

Some might suggest sweedums could be on three pages in the middle ...

Nice idea, Dave. I often enjoy reviewing old threads and having them categorized would be nice.

I'd love it if there was a spot for all the "What would you do here" threads. I love reading those and seeing what all the different players would do.
I'll never forget the one posted by hustler08 which OHB came up with an awesome shot.
See, instead of having to sift through everything, wouldn't it be nice to see what I am talking about immediately.

Regards,
Koop

I don't want to turn this into a negative thread, however if it ever came to fruition I think it would have a positive effect on everyone. I don't want to hijack anything Dave...let me know if you want me to delete the post. (BTW, make the call, you know which one)

I'd like to see an option available that is a "NOT INVITED" option. In other words...for anyone that STARTS a THREAD, he/she has up to 3 names that can be listed at the end of the post of people who ARE NOT invited to post on that thread. I think it'll save a lot of headaches. Hell, I might be the most non-invited individual on here, and that's OK. I'LL abide by whatever the thread starter says, no questions asked and no problems.
On the other hand, I'd like to also put that option into affect because I can definitely think of three people that I don't want on MANY of my threads.
I might not exclude them from all, but certain ones will have them outta here.

I think they should publish a book (THE BEST OF AZBILLIARDS) with all of the above, with all of our handles, so we all could become famous! Hell, we could put Drivermaker and Mawissa on the cover.

Think big Dave :D

I don't see this book generating big sales without Landshark right there with them on the cover.

Would that be the naked Demi Moore one with her belly 9 miles out?
I could give them a pic of the skinny Timberly and they could doctor it up to show the following.... DM sitting down, Marissa across his lap getting a spanking, me standing to the left of them in a catholic school girl uniform, reaching down with one hand pulling the string on Marissa's back while holding a beer in the other hand and LS standing to the right kind of behind us all rolling her eyes in disgust... :p

No need to delete anything, DM. and Friday is my day off, and first day of school for da kid :D so I'll have lots of time to make a call.

The 'not invited list' is very reasonable idea, and most interesting coming from you DM ! It would surely cut down on some flame wars, the, um, 'predictable' flame wars. However this idea, and the ones from Marissa (a coincidence I'm sure) would be enhancements to the sites programming and/or configuration and as such would be in Mikes or Jelsofts domain, although even with the price of storage these days he may not be able to afford Marissas PM box. An index is something that we the membership could support.

And I agree that the 'what would you do with this table ?' threads might be some of the most interesting Koop. I know they have been very helpful to my game and others would surely benefit from seeing them if they haven't already.

Oh ya, if the book comes out looking like some want it to look I'll gladly let someone else take all the credit ... please.

LMAO...this sounds GREAT to me. Hopefully we have a terrible photographer and I have to rehearse the spanking part over and over before he finally gets the right picture. :D (I might get a little tired of you pulling that cord and hearing the same thing over and over like a broken record...but hey, I guess I'm starting to get used to it already)

Actually you can use google.com and make search links for this specific web site.

So search for this on google.com
8-Ball Shots and Strategies site:www.azbilliards.com

Then you will get this link...
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...ategies++site:www.azbilliards.com&btnG=Search

Then you can imbed that link above into a category called...
8-Ball Shots and Strategies

You will need to experiment with the best words to use to get what you are searching for. Also may find some stuff better using quotes. And when using a minus sign (-), google thinks you want to filter out what follows the minus.

So experiment with...
8-Ball Shots and Strategies
"8-Ball" Shots and Strategies
"8 Ball" Shots and Strategies
+"8-Ball" +Shots +Strategies
etc.

Read google.com search help to find all the options.

Good idea, Billy Bob, but...

Having the stuff indexed is fine and dandy, but then what to do with all the information? That is, how does one catagorize everything into a "file cabinet" in the mind, so to speak, so the info is available when needed on a given shot? I mean, you can't come to AZ in the middle of a game and check out scattered (or catagorized, ftm) information.

Isn't that the real problem?

I have what I think is a good solution for this, but I want to hear other ideas about how some of you store and then actually USE what you know when you need it.

Guys,
I've had this idea for quite a while also (to catalogue / summarize a lot of the useful information here) as well as doing the same for many links around the web.

I'm still working on the ideal way to manage this. Perhaps like a mini-wikipedia with some experienced volunteers helping to add new links, do reviews, summarize some topics etc. But that needs a complex central management system, so I may start it more simply unless some tech expert wants to lead me in the right direction.

This would make conversations and learning a lot more productive as the newbies could be directed straight to a well organized summary to catch up on the facts and or different sides of the arguments.

I'd like to hear your ideas about how to organize the information and make it more useful.

As you wanted other ideas first, here is an intro to mine.

Website with categories and sub-categories such as Tables>Pockets; Intruction>Aiming.

So into the Aiming subcategory as an example. It would start with a basic intro to aiming (100 words) and then a more detailed discussion on some of the various sides of debate. (Maybe 300 words).

After this, a space for resident expert articles or contributors.
Then links to outide articles relevant to the discussion.
Then links to forum discussions.

Each of these have areas for reviews. One section of reviews would be by site appointed (level headed) experts. Other reviews by the general population would be included.

The review part would be a bit like Amazon.
Site monitors would delete argumentative reviews.
As new forum threads occur, they would be added to the links and rated according to value, so the uppermost links are the most useful.

Ok, your turn :)

holy cow this is a BIG site !

394 pages of threads ... I've slogged through the latest 100 pages and made a categorized list of 67 threads that I though interesting. While doing so I realized that DCP asks good questions, and most of the talk around here would not make good instructional material. Anyway I hope to keep at this and work my way back to the beginning over the next week or two. In the meantime if anyone wants to see what I've done, open up the attached word doc (zipped to fit).

You might even have chapter/s on locations: People talk, daydream, complain, and show off their home rooms and their personal game rooms (did you see the spread Mike's got with a pool table in front of a wall of window overlooking the ocean?). There were some interesting threads about a year ago when ?Rackin'Zak? wanted to start his own room and then later got onto the idea of creating a club room... people started talking about private club rooms in Germany and how they work, with membership dues etc...

Roomowners and staff, what it takes to make a good room, and esp. some of the non-Americans and the world travelers (The One) should have some pics and old threads to be found.

Recently I also got some great stuff on the history of billiards- so much I haven't nearly been able to explored it all yet.

And that's not even getting into the cue nuts wondering about predator shafts, customs, break/jump cues and who does the best points and why and where the balance point of the cue should optimally be.

And as for the lack of it all being instructional, it doesn't have to be. Shots could be a few chapters, but not the point of the book, necessarily: I rec'd a coffee table book for my birthday that's really just a lot of pictures and stories of poolrooms and players. But everyone has to pick it up and look at it, whether they play pool or not.

...call it "azbilliards" and stress the a- to- z interpretation :)
