An observation about my 9 ball break. Thoughts welcome.

Apologies if this is too basic to be of interest, but it has always puzzled me. Whenever I break, one of the balls remaining on the table is left spinning rapidly on the spot. Just the one and it appears to be a random ball each time.

Without any emperic evidence the most I can suggest is a very minute gap somewhere in the rack

I presume you are familiar with the subtle difference between in/ on, the fact that the two are neighbors on ye olde qwerty notwithstanding...

Seriously? With regularity, a ball stops ON the spot and spins?

I'd have to see a vid to believe that, though I do often see balls spinning without rolling, after the.break. I'd contend that is a result of collisions with the rails and other balls.

When I wrote "spinning rapidly on the spot" I wasn't referring to the actual spot. I meant one ball is left spinning in place somewhere on the table... only ever one ball, never two or more.

I think it honestly has to do with gaps, if your breaking with a template then I'm stumped, otherwise try a template/magic rack/ accurack.

I'm not using any sort of racking device, and agree it is probably gaps causing the effect. It just puzzles me why it is only ever one ball.

I'll try and sort out a video.

If your chosen rack is even the slightest bit off from perfect you'll have a hard time not getting gaps consistently. Especially if you have a habit of using it in the same orientation. And also if your using a "9 ball rack" those things are junk.

rack the balls in order
i.e.
1
2,3
4,5,6
7,8
9
break the balls 3-5 times, if you find the spinning ball now rack the balls properly and see if that corresponding balls position does it. Since you gave so little info i'll say this.

Odds are that there "is" a gap happening and the balls are dirty. You might want to give as much info as possible for best results and not the Pronoun game with "hey did you see that car outside when you walked in?"

You seem to imply that this happens on each and every break. Is that correct?

Balls do not acquire much spin when struck by other balls. The get a lot more spin when they hit cushions at an angle. I suspect that what you are seeing is a ball that has hit a rail or two and then hits full on another object ball and stops dead.
