Greetings all. I have a 9 foot antique table circa 1910. Link to web page with a few pics here. Clicking on the pics in the web page loads a much larger image. It looks identical to a Brunswick Jefferson to me, except for the inlay pattern is different. Quartersawn white oak with Brazilian rosewood rails. A table restoration person suggested it is likely a Charles Passow. Possible since I have seen a pic of a Passow made in this style as well. Below is a web page with a few pictures.
Ok, to the point. I am having the cloth changed to 860 and am wondering about the cushions. I have to hit the cueball really well to get 4 table lengths back and forth. It would take a monster hit to get 4 1/2. A shot into a corner with a little angle going three rails with inside top english to get back to the other end of the table is not doable for mortal players. Championship tournament K66 are installed. The cushions are fine, not that old relatively speaking. I know the rail design of these old tables plays a part in this the way they are attached from the side. You can hear the rails give when a ball hits with force, but the bolts are tight.
One thing I find peculiar is I cannot make the cueball hop off the table shooting hard with top english directly into the side rail, or at any angle hard into the side rail with top english. I can get the cueball to leave the surface on a really hard hit with top english, but not much. Not enough to get it bouncing. But the picture below seems to indicate that the nose height of the cushions are about 1 7/16", which seems right.
The cloth change should help, but I can't help but wonder if the cushions are a tad high and trapping the ball a little reducing the rebound. If the cushions are a bit high, I don't know if that means K55 should have been installed or an adjustment to the rails needed to be made and k66 are correct. I suspect changing to Artemis won't make much of a difference, but I just want to consider options while the cloth is being changed.
Any thoughts? Thanks.
