Just curious if anyone was headed over to Cookeville today to witness the match between Archer and Pickle.

I was hoping we could get an action report or two.

I played poker last night with a couple of guys that are going. They don't post but i will try and get an update. The word is that Bobby's backers are opening the rail to any and all bets. If I could get off work I would most definitely bet 5 or 10 large of Johnny. I think if they played ten ahead sets Pickle would not win more than 2 of them.

I certainly would never start a rumor, and I will probably get a little flaming for making this post, but the above question brings up an interesting point. I would never say that anything under the table was going on, and I have never known or heard of Johnny or Bobby being anything but on the up and up. It just seems weird to me that backers of a great shortstop would open the rail against one of the premier players over the past 15 years, and greatest bar table players of all time. They can't be that confident that Pickle will win.

I just wonder if there might be $20,000 worth of publicity to the owner of the Cue in Cookeville since it is already touted as one of the top action spots in the country. And this match is giving him alot of publicity for his room, and the action that goes on there. I know that he is charging a door fee (which I understand for such a great match), so I guess the backers will not really have to eat the entire $20,000 if Bobby does lose.

Anyway, for me, it just seems like too risky to open the rail. For that reason, I would be leary to put any bet down.

Again, I'm not saying that anything isn't right with this match. I wish Bobby well, and hope he pulls off a victory. I've just seen Archer play the bar table for 15 years, and I wouldn't bet against him playing anyone.

I would have to agree that I dont get this matchup. The word I got is that Pickle has already been beat by a number of players in Cookesville. Vilmont, Bartrum, Kirkwood and Baraks supposedly all won there and I dont think any of those guys like it against Archer. It does make you go hmmmmm

Mike,
I thought the exact same thing, but really, what would Johnny have to gain by doing business with Pickle? 10K maybe? I don't think that he would throw a match like that and especially not for a small amount like this. He has too much to risk with sponsors, etc. I doubt that anyone is gonna bet 50K or any ridiculous number anyway. If I could have gotten off work I guess I would have fallen in the "trap", but it sure as hell wouldn't have been the first time I bet on what I thought was a near sure thing and lost, lol.

I knew someone would bring this up but I would have given odds it wouldn't be you. I know you don't mean to imply anything, I just find it funny that with all of the naysayers and nits here that someone didn't beat you to the punch. I can say one thing and leave it at that - I have never heard of Archer dumping a match.

Hey Tommy,

I don't think that they are doing business, and I agree that neither of them have anything to gain by not playing their best.

I just think that there may (and let me stress "may") be other factors than just a pool match. I think that the owner of the room in Cookeville has alot to gain by promoting this match, and I think he is one of Bobby's backers. Like I said, the publicity of the match, the gate, and the word being spread about all of the action at the room would be tremendous.

I hope nobody thinks that I feel there is anything underhanded going on. I don't. I just think that there are more factors than pool at work. I think it is a great marketing strategy by the owner of The Cue in Cookeville. He has gotten plenty of publicity, not just here but on other forums as well as in every pool room within 200 miles. There were gentlemen at the poolroom here in Greenville talking about riding over just to watch the match. I was in Chattanooga at Diamond Billiards this weekend, and the match between Pickle and Archer and was all that everyone was talking about.

I heard this weekend that Wednesday was the best action night there anyway, so I'm sure there will be tons of other action as well as the Archer/Pickle match.

Let me say once again that I don't believe anything underhanded is going on.

I have known Johnny for about 10 years and have never known him to dump and I agree that he actually has more to lose than gain if he did. Maybe Pickle and his backers just think Pickle can win. Should be a good match to sweat though.

Hey Daniel,

I did wait a full minute before I hit the "Submit Reply" button. I knew alot of folks would take what I said not in the manner that it was intended. I have always known Johnny as one of the most stand-up people in pool.

I just think that with the publicity, etc., it may make one of them tighter, or it may make one of them looser. And it is a close enough game that one little factor other than pool might turn the tide either way. I just wouldn't bet the match because of all the publicity.

Again, I hope Pickle takes it off. He's a great player and has the ability to beat Archer on occasion. But if I were staking him, I don't think I would "open the rail".

Are you coming over to Greenville this weekend?

I was supposed to go but "extenuating circumstances" will cause me to miss it. I just got off the phone with Russ and he and Hennessee are going over there. I guess I will just stay in Knoxville and snap off the monthly at Breakers on Saturday.

Good Luck,
