I like to know about all of the colorful characters in pool and to post here about them allows some to learn a little if they've never heard of them or add some info if they may have run into them.

Look what happened in the thread so far; we learned more about Tori, Chewy, and even ID'd Spitball Charlie Darling.

I was gonna post another "Which tip is better?" thread but changed my mind at the last minute. ;)

It was really impressive when Charlie would chalk his tongue and do masse shots!

Charlie is a real nice guy that can also play a lights out game. First saw him in Columbia,Mo in early 80's.
Saw him last year at a benefit at Kenny's in Barnhart ,Mo. Always forget to ask, how do you figure out you can do this.

I saw Spitball Charlie when he was in Columbia, probably the same time you did. Was it at Phil's place, the Columbia Billiard Center?

Seems like that was the Mo State Championships, I was 17 and Tom Ferry beat me in the finals.......none of us could do what Charlie could do though, it was really impressive when he chalked his tongue and did masse shots! :yeah:

Chewy was a good player, the best in Montana for many years. He just seemed to fall off the map about 15-20 years ago. Just wonder if he is still alive. I liked Mike and was always glad to see him at a tournament. He came to a couple of my first U.S. Bar Table Championships in Reno. Probably the last time I saw him.

I think he was from ND.

I played him once in a tournament in Missoula and massacred him (normally I couldn't have beat him but I fell into the zone this one event). Mike Page asked about him a few years back and said he was driving a school bus nowadays.

OK, here you go Brian, before you start asking about guys who lost the fingers off their bridge hand in a buzzsaw accident.

gotta wonder ...

Years ago I knew people that rode bulls and such. The kinda guy that would watch somebody else do something and immediately say, "Hold my beer!"

Got to wonder how many of these guys turned up at the emergency room with a cue ball locked behind their teeth after watching one of these shows. Definitely one of those "don't try this at home" or your local pool hall things!Got to admit I am one of the people that would be on the rail if somebody did have to try though!

Back in the 80's there was a guy who was know for this, but I can't remember his name. He was busted at a "Starchers" tournament back then and they let him do an exhibition for his entry fee and my road partner Gary Spaeth asked me if it was OK if he slept on our motel room floor, which I agreed to. He could spit the cue ball 3 rails and make a hanger on it's last revolution, which was kind of impressive. ;) I haven't seen or heard of him since we left Akron on that trip.

I think you're right, from N. Dakota and I vaguely remember someone telling me the same thing about him driving a bus.

Mouthy pool players are not a new thing...here’s one that Frank Taberski did an exhibition with.

As Jay and Bob pointed out, the player you remember was definitely Steve Simpson. He had a nice run in the late '80s and early '90s showing up at pro events and entertaining in between some matches. He had a pretty good patter too. I'll always remember his announcing he was going to demonstrate a draw shot, which definitely got the audience's attention. He'd then stand over an object ball...spit the cue ball downward...and of course the cue ball would carom off in the opposite direction. BUT the comedy in the shot still brought the house down! - John Lewis
