Hey how about we have a project here at AZ.. ?

I was thinking it would be really cool to have a test about billiards...

Something that (I) we could share with members, new players and team mates (if league?) to test what we really know about the technical facts and general wisdoms regarding the game of pool...

I've seen some small quizes here and there but never seen an organized "test" something comprehensive...

Its quite obvious that here at AZ we have an something that may not exist anywhere else in the world in such a captive consontration.... WISDOM and KNOWLEDGE... collectively this forum has hundreds, NO!, THOUSANDS of years of collective billiards experience....

I would like to organize and document a writen test about billiards to share with the community.... For the purpose of educating one another and whomever share a passion for the game we love...

Here's the idea...

Everyone share something they know about pool... it doesn't have to be an absolute (highly technical) fact... it may be something you learned along the way that helped you understand the game, or a facet of the game... it maybe be extremely technical... it can BE ANYTHING...

Let me give some quick examples... (in some cases it can be a simple question, it could also be assisted with a cuetable diagram... )

Q: when executing a bank shot applying inside english will:

A. Increase or Widen the angle of rebound off the cusion
B. Decrease or Tigthen the angle of rebound off the cusion
C. Will not effect the angle of rebound off the cusion

Q: Outside english on a cut shot at medium speed will:

A. The collision induced throw will straighten (decrease) the angle of the cut
B. The collision induced throw will exagerate (increase) the angle of the cut
C. Will not change the path of the object ball, only the angle of rebound (leave) of the cueball after it makes contact will a rail.

Q: In the game of 9 ball, if an object ball is knocked off of the table

A. It spots, and the incoming players plays the cueball as it lies
B. It stays off the table (down) and the incoming player plays the cueball as it lies
C. It spots, and the incoming player begins with Ball in hand.
D. It stays off the table (down) and the incoming player gets ball in hand

Q: When playing a harder tip vs. a softer tip

A. Harder tips increase english
B. Softer tips increase english
C. the ability to impart english is not significantly effected by the hardness of a tip.

More example questions (all "levels" of difficulty in questions are highly desired!!)...

Q. What is "throw"?
Q. In the game of one pocket, how many balls must hit a rail to constitute a legal break?
Q. What is the highest documented "run" in straight pool, and by whom?
Q. When gambling, What does it mean when you give the 7 and out?

Etc, etc, etc....

You're playing straight pool, please explain how to take care of these situations...

1) The remaining object ball is inside the rack area.

2) The cue ball is inside the rack area.

3) Both are in the rack area.

REP! Awesome, thanks. Could you PM me the answers?

Q. What does it mean when you put "american" on a ball ?

Q. What does it mean when you "Tom Cruise" a runout ?

Q. Many players "pause" at the top of the backswing, What is the reason ?

Q. When you execute a shot, during the final stroke through the cueball what should you be looking at ?

A. The place on the cueball you are attempting to hit
B. The spot on the object ball you are attempting to hit
C. The pocket you intend to make the ball into
D. The ferrule / Tip of your cue shaft

Q. What is the most important shot / stroke in pool and why ?
Q. In 9ball, when using a "cut break" which 3 balls are you focused on controling and where are you sending them ?

These are tough. I failed over 75% of them, myself.

Question: In what order should the balls be racked when playing One Pocket?
Question: If a person only has one tooth, do they still have to brush for ten minutes?
Question: When the Special Olympics are held, what do they do about handicapped parking?

Good luck. :)

Q. During a common "pedulum" style stroke, the grip hand is directly below the elbow. Ideally at a 90* angle. What is the tendency or common error if the grip hand is ahead of 90* (forward grip) at address? What is the tendency if the grip hand is Less than 90* (back grip) at address?

Q: What does the term COSMO mean?

A) A complicated runout in 9-ball
B) A simple runout in 9-ball
C) A 9 ball on the break

Are you sure you don't mean 90º? The forearm should be 90º to the cue.

edit- for anyone that wants to know how to get the degree mark, just hold down the ALT key while typing 167 on the right keypad, then release the alt key.

lol. yeah 90* is what I meant to say... see what I mean? very educational... everyone learned that a 45* angle would be a huge mistake. and that my brain farts often. corrected.

What is the pivot point of a cue? How does someone determine where a cues (shafts) pivot point is? What is the primary value to understanding your cues pivot point?

I like the hell out of this thread already, but don't have time to hang around. Got some errands to run. Should be a good one.

When examining a 9ball rack, an informed player is often "reading" the rack. What is the player looking for? If a player finds what he/she is looking for, what are the 2 most basic adjustments a player will make?

Which of these cueballs is the heaviest? Lightest?

Red Dot
Red Circle
Red Aramith
Green Aramith
Blue Dot
Black Dot
Measle Ball

What adjustments should you be aware of when using a heavier cueball as opposed to a lighter cueball ?

I guess im just gonna use this thread like a personal note pad anytime I think of somethin new Ill just add it... maybe circle back some day and put something together.

I usually have a handful of "scraps" files on my computer. One would be "scraps pool" another "scraps machine tools" and so on. When I read or discover something good I place it in the appropriate scraps file. Brownell's gunsmithing supply has compiled the tips and tricks that they have learned for themselves and from customers in a four or five volume set and growing. Immensely valuable to someone working with guns, wood, or metal.
