Ball Breakers Last Night

9 Ball Girl

Ok, I have to admit that I tuned in once again to watch 'cause I wanted to see who would be on this time. To my surprise, on the show was Sid Chaklai, an older gentleman that I know from Corner Billiards in NY (I believe he lives in Queens). Anyway, he didn't make it 'cause he got beaten by Melinda Huang (I know that name because I've seen it on the West Coast tourneys). The other girl, I forgot her name, was a bartender and she seemed to shoot pretty decent. The other guy, I also forgot his name, supposedly beat someone for $15,000 (I think in his bio he said it was for $50/rack) but his shooting didn't impress me.

The final match for 20G was between Melinda and the bartender and I don't understand why Melinda kept trying to combo the 9 (at least 2x) when she obviously shoots pretty good. I can understand her missing the 9 ball for 20G because of pressure but I have to admit, that last night's show was enjoyable.

I'm guessing that next week will be celebrities (I'm going to assume that they do non-celebrities every other week).

Good show!

I watched it as well. I was surprised to see Melinda on there. She's a TD at Hardtimes in Bellflower. She was firing those 9 ball combos because the 5 ball was tied up. They play miss a shot, and it's ball in hand. Melinda waited till the other girl broke it out, then went for it. Too bad she scratched on the 6 ball. She left her position a little short coming from the 5. She plays pretty well, I thought she'd win for sure.

And that Chris dude....said he won somebody's college tuition. 18 K, and they started playing at 50 a rack. Yeah right!! It must have been a BLIND school, the guy was supposed to attend! He couldn't play at all. But he sure could TALK......I was glad to see Melinda whup him twice, last one being the 9 on the snap.

It was a good episode.

Sounds like a clown is the casting director. while I am in favor of amatuers being casted, the level of play needs to be there for future audiences.

However, I am in favor of different nites casting different level players. Watching four "4-Speeds" go at it, for $20 K, has got to be serious comedy.
Then have some "7 or 8-Speeds" one week, then 10-Speeds one week, always planting a celebrity in the group.

The first one I saw was a re-run of the celebs. I tolerated one game...if you call it that. Then I was bored last night and wanted to see a real episode so I caught the last half of last night episode...IT WAS MUCH BETTER...but still dumb. They need more smack, IMO...though I missed the guy calling Ewa out.

Maybe they should turn it into full contact Pool. You know, like sending the defense to the table after you miss. Then again, it might be more interesting if everytime someone missed, they would have to do a double shot of Yagermeister :D

I didn't like the male host coming over to the player right when they were on their last shot. I guess that's suppose to add to the "suspense". Ooohhhhh ahhhhh

Yeah, I was just about to post the same thing. That was amazing. It's like, "just in case you forgot that this shot is worth $20k, let me walk over here, stop the action, tell you about it, then say good luck and go back to my chair." I understand the purpose of the act for TV, but man, could you imagine someone doing that to you in the middle of one of your games? That guy would get the butt end of a pool cue shoved up his ^$$. As for the show, that was the first episode that I was able to watch, and although it wasn't good pool, I thought it was good entertainment.

From what I have seen, he always does that right when someone is shooting at the cheese. You'd think she would have fired the 8, pulled up and waited for him to come over. Rather than getting down on the 9, THEN getting interruptted mid-stroke. You KNOW it's coming......I'd rather go ahead and get it over with before I got down to shoot the 9.

Knowing me....for 20 K....my arm would lock up anyway!!

Talkin' about a BIG shot. 20 K isn't any chump-change. Even some of the big boys would have trouble with it.

When the Ballbreakers were here in D.C., I was thinking about going to the audition with Keith McCready, but was told they did not want any so-called "pros" there.

I was quite surprised when I heard UPA Touring Pro Mike Davis was allowed to play with the rest of the so-called "amateurs." Girl1won on this forum posted that the producers did not want pros for this TV show.

However, I still got some nice free Ballbreakers souvenirs from Joey Ryan who did go to the D.C. audition, which made me a happy camper! :D

The show stinks.I forced myself to watch it 2xs never again. It probably will be cancelled after a few more airings.Too bad it would of been good to watch pool on T.V. every week.

Jam,

This is part of the problem with casting directors who don't know anyting about pool (or action for that matter). I haven't watched the show, but you can bet that if I heard that Keith McCready was on there with 20k to throw around, (along with some others like Lil John and Tony Watson), I assure you that I would be watching, along with an audience which would be 10 or 20 times larger than it is now.

Every player who knows anything about the game would watch. Even professional level players. And for anyone who is not an avid player, the entertainment value would be such that if they tuned in one time, they would tune in every week arter that to see what was going on.

Now I have to watch it to see Sid! I can't believe he is on it, he plays so slow but what a sweetie!

Mike,
I really don't believe the producers are targeting an audience of serious players. I think they are trying to reach the general public and casual bangers. To that end, I think they may have a good product. I say we should support the show in it's efforts to expand the size of the audience who tune in, and maybe end up spending more time at a pool room as a result. How many times have you seen a thread here discussing how to make pool grow and become more popular?
Steve

Has anyone taped ballbreakers from the start as I would really like to see it as we don't get the game show network over here in the u.k.

I’ve seen the show…I did not hate the show…but I would not go out of my way to tune in…I will probably DVR some of the shows for when there is nothing ells on.

I think they could do a pretty good show similar to all the other “fake reality shows” …They could get 10-20 “good” players that have some character about them, put them all in a hose and do elimination weeks to get down to the last two…Have some “events” set up each week to determine who plays the elimination match….Like, who can draw the ball the most rails, make all 15 balls the fastest, make the most balls on the break…etc. etc…

Each week two guys have to play to stay on the show….loser goes home, and the last on in the house gets $100k or more…

That….I would tune in every week to watch…Especially with the right characters…(that can make 3 balls in a row)

I talked to a lady friend of mine Sandy Schuman, who puts out a small pool magazine, Because i mention'd that i tried to watch one of the episodes but was mortified cuz of the celebrities, but she said they was only doing two celeb shows, and the rest was with actual pool players.

So i guess its one of those if you catch the right show it should be fun to watch.

I've seen 2 episodes. 1 of them was a celebrity episode that was hard to watch. But the normal episode I saw was pretty entertaining. Had a couple ok players (that could all spot me the 6-out and the breaks). They played good enough to have a chance to get out...but at the same time were just as capable of screwing up any connect-the-dots out. I watched it with my friend and we were laughing hysterically throughout the show.

I don't like is the ball in hand after every miss towards the end...it'd be a lot better if there was only ball in hand up til the 5 or something...more suspense. Also the pockets looked ridiculously big.

While the show is a little ridiculous with some of the rules (how many times can you see ball-in-hand?), I think it's good for the non-hardcore fans (as someone mentioned). Ewa is good at explaining things in easy to understand terms and some of the players are good. I follow the WPBA more than the top men's tours (probably due to TV coverage), and it's nice to match faces with names I see in brackets. Last week was Tina Pawloski, and this week was Lisa Oldfield. I'm impressed that she's battling cancer and still kicking some butt. I liked that she said she'd spend the $20,000 traveling around the country and hustling. I have to admit I was happy she won.

I think they should have a pro episode. There are plenty of the well-known professionals that could really have fun with the atmosphere/rules and still show some amazing pool (Vivian, Jeanette, and Melissa come to mind right away for women). But, it could spoil viewers.
