Best shaper/cutter?

I newbie here and I know this has probably been covered many times, but I wanted to get opinions of a shaper/cutter I was about to order.

I was going to order the Porper cut-rite shaper/cutter or the Trutip shaper. Apparently these have razor blades...I'm not interested in the Ultimate cue shaper by the way...already tried that one.

Any advice is appreciated.

thanks, JED

"CHALK"

I have played pool for over 45 years and have NEVER used anything to scuff, shape or otherwise damage my tip.
THE ONLY THING YOU NEED IS CHALK!
Chalk is a natural abrasive and everytime you "chalk up" properly, you are re-shaping your tip. In other words, chalk acts just like sandpaper when properly applied.

Either can cause damage to the ferrule unless you're extremely careful and know what you're doing.
Properly installed tips should be trimmed, burnished and shaped by the installer (using a lathe). After that the tip will take its shape from your particular style of play.

wow Old.....you dont use anything at all? You must shoot with a superhard tip?
I dont mess with my tip alot.....but i do occasionally hit it with a tip pick or some sandpaper, also have one of those burnishers so when it mushrooms out a little bit i can get it back in line.

Got a link to one of those 'burnishers' ?

I bought one of those Porper shapers and it didn't work well for me. I'd recommend you do as the Old guy says and leave it alone. If you must mess with the tip (and I have trouble keeping my hands off it too) get one of those approximately 8" long 1/2 round sanders. You can make your own by cutting a pvc pipe in half. Someone already posted, in another thread, what sizes to use to get nickel/dime/quarter shaped tip.

Sandpaper tip shapers...

You can buy sandpaper tip shapers for nickel or dime shape at the following link and quarter shaped sandpaper tip shapers come with cheap tip repair kits sold at discount stores. (Hold coin to inside of shaper to see what size it is.) Use 100 grit sandpaper (held to the inside curve of shaper with your thumb) for initially shaping your tip, then 220 grit sandpaper to re-shape tip or re-surface tip from time to time. Cut sheets of sandpaper with scissors to size.

Hold shaper over tip in front of light to see if your tip needs shaping or not.

Nickel and dime shapers...
(See "Quick Tip" 3/4 way down page)
http://playpool.com/store/shop.php

Do-it-yourself...
Cut electrical PVC in half and about 8 inches long - Be safe, use a vise to hold the pipe when sawing and both hands on saw.

PVC SIZES...
Dime (1/2" PVC Pipe) [15.00 mm]
Nickel / Penny (3/4" PVC Pipe) [19.75 mm]
Quarter (1" PVC Pipe) [25mm]
Half dollar (1 1/4" PVC Pipe)
Billiard ball (2" PVC Pipe)

U.S. COIN SIZES...
Dime ......................... 18.00mm
Penny ..................... 19.10mm
Nickel ....................... 21.10mm
Quarter ...................... 24.10mm
Half Dollar .................. 30.50mm

yeah you can get em off ebay....at the buddy hall store. Im sure seyberts and ozone has em too. Ive never had a problem with them spinning off a tip, imust be using them right lol.

Tip Tool

I like the It's George tip tool. It's a little more expensive ($15) than most but it never wears out. I've had one for 7 or 8 years and it is still really sharp and works great.

I've bought just about every gadget there is and when I all is said and done I think I agree with OldHasBeen. I'll still shape it or rough it up now and again because I just have to tinker with things, but I don't really think it is neccessary.

What I do.........

When I have my (Soft Mori) tip put on by Jim Buss, I have him shape it with a very little cone shape going from bottom to top of the tip. If it were to mushroom a little, it would be straight, but so far it hasn’t in over 3 months of playing. I only burnish my tip by using the natural oil behind my ear to coat it and then I either use a dollar bill or a shiny backing off of a Priority Mail address sticker to burnish.
