Big Shark

Just watched the generation pool 9 ball. Wisemen vs Archer. This was a match with a ref. Ronnie is cued ready to shoot shot that he almost froze on, Archer gets up and questioned the shot??? Isn't that what the ref is for... to make sure the shot is done correctly!

I think a DQ wouldn't be out of line here. Shocking watching this. It would be like tiger coughing or start flapping around like a bee is after him during someones putt.

Great player, very weak play imo.

I just saw that too. I am more inclined to give Johnny the benefit of the doubt and call it bad judgement on his part.

Problem is though, the match had a ref. Why get out to question shot with a ref watching. I have seen guys do this to get a ref to watch shot, but Archers shot question was shark to me. Even after the shark he keeps sharking by going over and trying to talk to him about it later in match.

You can't tell me that he didn't know how pissed Ronnie was and going over wouldn't fuel the fire and heat him up again. He's been around pool too long not to know.

What ever the reason it didn't look good on him after them calling him player of the 90's etc and then having the two fighting about a bad display of sportmanship.

I didn't see it, but reading the scenario it sounds very much like an intentional shark. If you are unclear about your opponents intentions, ask before he winds up the stroke, while he's considering his options. If you want to jack with his mind, wait until he's totally focused on the shot & then jump up with your questioning. It's not rocket science. It's a trick learned early in every players days. It's rude & intentional & should be a foul or DQ. That's the kind of stuff you expect to encounter in a cheap bar tourney, not a prestigeous reffed event. Again, I didn't see it but if it happened the way it was described, then it was an intentional sharking technique. He'd been less obvious by sneezing.

I completely agree, it was a bad move and could have cost Ronnie the match.

All I mean is that I prefer to give him the benefit of the doubt as far as character is concerned.

Nevertheless I think it should be BIH if a player gets out of his chair during a players turn.

They call fouls on taping the table, they have called fouls on players being jittery, moving around in another's line of sight, but nothing was called on Archer physically walking to the table during a shot? I didn't understand it at all really. I would have been just as pissed as Ronnie if not more.

I know what you mean. If that isn't a foul, what is? It would be no different than telling someone, during their shot, not to miss a thin cut or it is a foul. To even walk over to his chair and talk about it later in match should have been the second personal foul and DQ'd. Minimum should have been ball in hand for approaching table with a ref and then DQ for talking to him later.

I remember when this happened and when it did i felt embarssed for johnny.

btw go to youtube and search for generation pool and you will find interviews from both players after the match.

Johnny said something to the effect that he wanted to know what the rule was for his own satisfaction.

My guess is that he was actually trying to make sure the ref would be paying close attention to the hit. Has ST been known to make bad calls, or has he made a bad call on Johnny in the past? Not to knock him if he has; we're all human.

I'm just speculating from the benefit of the doubt point of view.

Regardless, he shouldn't have gotten up like that, especially in a refereed match. But of course, a lapse in judgment and an accidental shark is better than if this was an intentional move.

Either way, I think the ref should have at least issued an unsportsmanlike conduct warning if not a ball-in-hand foul. The damage (distraction) had already been done, regardless of intention.

It would be interesting to see how the discussion would go if this had been a non-reffed match.

IMO Just a warning.

Ronnie could have asked for a ruling on Johnny's leaving the chair while he was down on the shot and the ref was judging the hit.

IMO, Talking during his Ronnies stroke is definetly at distraction and should be, at the very least, a warning. If it had been the second time, loss of match, and if it was flagrant DQ.
