Breaking your cue; A right of passage?

Show me a pool player, and I'll show you someone who has, at one time or another, broken a cue.

The cue I broke definitely had it coming. Sometimes you may feel trapped with your cue, and there is no way out, or you are forced to defend yourself, and in a pinch break your cue in half in order to use as a weapon. Other people can't come to grips with how far away their game is from their expectations, and in turn let their cue have it. It's even possible that you are afraid that people are laughing behind your back, because you show up to league night with a Cutec, Scorpion, or a pink ribbed Stealth, and you want people to understand that you mean business.

And if you say you didn't, your either lying or your not as passionate about the game as the rest of us.

I've seen it a couple of times....I'll quit the game if I ever do it...I got to think I'm pretty passionate about the the game...I'm equally passionate about my cues..And try to refrain from showing my ass like that.

Ive never broken a cue to unrepairable status, but I have broken the buttcap. In my defense the material used was fairly brittle to begin with. I also broke a shaft. But that was a while ago and Ive learned to control my frustration a little better.

.....I think you are way off base thinking most serious pool players have busted their cue.

.....True i broke one but MANY guys i knew were dumbfounded and thought I was nuts for doing it. I dont even think one in 10 serious players have broken a cue. There are plenty of ways to let off steam. A lot find one that doesnt cost them anything cause they are cheap!!
 
Think of it this way - Do you think it is cool for Earl the Pearl to beak his cue on TV? Do you think he is an example to follow when he does this? I don't. Although you may feel like breaking your cue or punching the wall, etc. people will think of you as they think of the Pearl. He/you are a total asshole for doing something like this.

I am not lying and I am extrememly passionate about the game, but I also hold respect for my cue. I will admit that I have brought the cue in the air as a backstroke for smashing my cut, but never made the downward motion. I have also waived it sideways in the air, but any and all incidents occured in my own home and while practicing. I have not and don't think I could ever do something like that in public.

I've broke tips off several cues, but they were slip on tips, while I was breaking. I did break a Cuetec once, not intentionally, and I fixed it. It was on a break shot. I break like a monster, the ferrule cracked and the tip flew off. It was an older cutec, and I think the ferrule had started to come loose anyways from constant breaking. I didn't consider it a loss at all.
 
I view cue breaking not as passion for the game but as a rather immature emotional outburst. I lose a bit of respect for the player who displays this lack of self-control.

Let's not even go there, Cooper. I'm talking about cues I can afford to bust up, like a burgendy graphite Earl Strickland cue I paid $65 for.

So you lost all respect for Earl Strickland breaking his cue in that Youtube video? Really?
 
I've never broken a cue, but I understand the urge. I realize that a cue can become a extension of a player, and as in life some relationships, things must come to a end. So starting today, Ive started a CUE RESCUE. Send me your Southwests,, Scruggs, Szambotis, Blackcreeks, Capones, Mottleys and any cue that is custom. I promise that if I dont like the way a cue shoots, or looks I will do my damnedest to find a good home, someone that won't abuse it. PM me.......Charlie D PS. no cuetec's that rescue is not for me
 
Never broken a cue. I did come close years ago when I launched my snooker cue across the room. All it got was a little ding but as soon as it'd left my hand I was thinking "Oh hell, what did I do?"

I've grown up & calmed down a lot since then!

So you value the life of a Scruggs, but not the Cuetec? Good thing to know about a guy.;)

We all have, or, at least, we are now playing with cues we can't afford to easily replace.

This too is the closest I've ever come to breaking a cue, oh well, it will most likely be sent to Ryan to get the nicks in the finished fixed, among other things...
 
One night I won an "8 on the break" pot. I was so happy, I immediately raised my arms in victory. I forgot that the ceiling fans were on.

My shaft got dinged pretty bad, but not as bad as my ego.:p

I've never broken any of my cues. I don't get angry like that.

If anyone thinks having a passion for the game makes immature behavior acceptable......... they need to learn something about sportsmanship.... and how to act like an adult.

I shamefully admit...

:( I regret that in a fit of immaturity, when I was 17 or 18 yrs. old, I snapped a brand new, just delivered, 500.00 Viking with all the trimmings. This was 36 years ago. I was playing in a sanctioned 14.1 tournament and we were playing in the semi final rounds to 150 points. I had a high run of 128 and jawed a 4 ball hanging about 6 inches from the corner hole and busted the rack wide open for a quality player who proceeded to run 150 and out on me. I was so po'd I snapped the cue into about 4 pieces. I quit playing for almost 20 years because of that match. I've made worse blunders since I started playing again and you won't find as much as a blemish on any of my weapons from not playing well. I guess the anger management classes helped after all.:D :D :D

I have never broken a cue. But, not for a lack of trying. I just never whacked one over my knee.

That being said, I guess it strokes my ego that I've had a couple of opponents snap their cues after I squeaked by them.
