i like 'em...but no one does anything interesting with 'em.
i think they have more design potential than spliced points.
maybe the people who make 'em have zero creativity:)

i know i shouldn't feel this way but the way they're built makes me nervous.

IMHO it was a lost art that I am glad to see utilized in this day and age. I remember in the early 80's, the only people I can remember making butterfly splices were the billiard cue manufacturers from overseas. Now there are quite a few competent cuemakers using this technique.

As far as stability, if Marcus' Tascarella (well over 80 years old) is still solid, I could safely say that with the newer adhesives a current b/f splice should be able to handle a few gazillion games of pool.

As far as creativity, its the cues you don't see. Paul F made a quadruple b/f splice wood handle cue where the splices mirror imaged each other over the handle/forearm line and in the butt area where the sleeve met the handle. Its a great looking cue that started as an experiment. He also has a few other experiments hanging around his shop. With these cues there is alot of time spent in geometry mastering. So when you want to go radical, its not an overnight invention, its a cultivation of artistic concept meeting mechanical and mathmatical reality.

Buterfly Points

Greetings,

Check out some of Arnot's Butterflies: http://www.arnotq.com/pages/butterfly.html

Like all his cues they "look great and shoot straight" extremely solid hitting with great cue ball feedback.

Good Luck,

Larry

joe....see, there are some nice examples here, like the miltonio, hmmmmmmm,,,maybe i should get me one:)

but the thing for my personnal taste, is that althought it's nice, it's kinda like what i see in hand crafted wood boxes at the local crafts fair..... the samsaras too.

too "craftsy" FOR A CUE for my taste, if you get my meaning :)

Try looking into Paul Fanelli's cues. Some of the cues you've seen of his here (classicues', ironchef's) are beautiful cues but he does other, even more non-traditional butterfly designs. As for the way they are built making you nervous, Paul's cues are extremely well-built and quite stable! Beautiful, solid-hitting, works of art!

I own a Brunswick butterfly conversion and am looking to order a Faneeli later this year.

I am a HUGE FAN of butterfly points. As mentioned on another thread, I'm also a sucker for purpleheart. Now...if someone has a cue with both....

How about this one... not mine but it has purpleheart

A strikingly unusual design with a South American Rosewood forearm and butt sleeve and a Tiger Maple handle. The "V" joint at the forearm and handle area is celebrated with five veneers of contrasting colors. The butt sleeve is attached with a wide Saturn ring of Bloodwood and veneers. Three Purple Heart butterfly points, with four veneers, adorn the butt sleeve. The joint collar and butt cap are separated by a Corian ring of appropriate colors. ;)
