any of you posters out there know C. J. Wiley? i was watching some of my old pool tapes, 1998 ESPN Ultimate Challenge, and he was playing. i tried to speak with him at the 1999 BCA Open at the Riviera Penthouse and he didnt seem to be very friendly to me. i realize he had just lost to Ismael Paez, but overall i got the impression back then he was somewhat arrogant and very self centered.

however, a few years ago i saw an article on him in a Billiards magazine that he had found the Lord, and was a changed man, or something???

anyway, just wondering if any of you posters out there have ever met him? i am assuming i mis-judged him after trying to talk with him back in 1999.

I haven't seen CJ in quite a few years, but I can verify that CJ is not the same person he was 15 years ago. CJ (like many of us) has had his ups and downs in life. Its also important to note that approaching any professional player after they lost a match will be slightly unfair to the player if you tend to judge them by their demeanor at that moment. I would say approach them away from the tournament environement. When they are at the tournament, most players are all business and focused on competition. IMO CJ is one of the nicest people you will run into both at and away from the table.

CJ was a very high-strung and talanted young player. He's really a nice guy.He played with my cues for several years. He would fly down to houston from Dallas, to have me work on his tips. He would fly in on sat. night, play pool in my shop all night, and I would take him to the air/port early the next day. Never hear from him for weeks at a time, then he's back.
He's very respectful and full of talant.

Doesn't he still have his poolroom in Dallas? I guess he doesn't compete much anymore...

My experiences with CJ - A Good Story.

CJ has always seemed to be a gentleman and very good player. We played in the Missouri State 9 Ball Championship finals way back in '82. He is originally from Missouri. He wasn't quite the player he later became (Thank God) so I was able to escape with a win.
Flash-forward many years - We were watching the World 9 Ball champion game between Strickland and Efrin (I think) at a Vegas casino. We had very good seats and CJ and I were placed next to each other. Weenie Beanie was sitting next to CJ. CJ & I remember each other and begin to talk. He remembers me beating him in '82 and asked how we could play for some serious cash. Now remember, Beanie has known me for years and knows how I match up. I said to CJ that I am aware of how good he plays now and would at least need the last two. His eyes get real big and he starts to get excited like he has just hooked a big fish. Now all he has to do is Land Him. Beanie is watching and listening and already knows the Punch Line and I can see him starting to enjoy the Sting that he knows is coming.
CJ agrees to play me with the last two and now wants to get the bet as high as he can. After we agree to $500 a game, he says "Lets Go".
Beanie says to CJ - What’s the game? CJ says I'm going to give him the last two for $500 a game. Beanie says, No, I mean what game are you going to play. CJ says 9 Ball (of course).
I STAND UP AND SAY - "HELL NO" - I'M TALKING ABOUT PLAYING 8 BALL.
All, except CJ, had a good laugh.
