(Hope I spelled the last name correctly)

At the end of the 11pm news cast tonight they showed a clip of Landon doing his trick shots. It was a small 30 sec spot where they gave his name, age, & location. They showed some trick shots and mentioned a couple of the tricks that he can do and that was it.

That's the first time pool has ever been mentioned on any of my local stations that I know of. Congrats Landon, you made the local news in Harrisburg, PA. ;)

Landon is a great young man!

Timberly...Did they mention that Landon represented our country in the Junior World Championships, last summer in Austria? He didn't win, but he did receive a medal for a "best sportsmanship" award. He's a terrific young man, who I predict, will do great things in pool!:D

No, it wasn't a story that they were running, it was just a small segment of interest to fill up the last few seconds of time at the end of the broadcast.

It wasn't much, but it was better than nothing. I saw him for the 1st time back in May and I was quite impressed.

Shawn Putnam was standing next to me amazed at Landon's thought process and game plan. He said Landon was playing the layout just like he or any other pro would.

Hey Timberly,
I watched Landon at a JR's Qualifier in Marietta, GA a few months back. I could not believe what I saw. An 11 year old with more pose than some of our PRO's.

Not only a great player, a great kid!

Yes Landon is quite a young man! He's not only a great player, he's one of the most level headed kids I've met. His parents are great, and give him all the support he could ask for without "pushing him" to the extent that he can't enjoy it. I'm excited to be working on a set of cues for Landon and his father, who's a BCA instructor as well! Landon drew out some very good drawings of the designs he wants on his cues and is very articulate about what he feels in a cue and what's important to him. This kid really has a head on his shoulders and is eager to learn! Besides working with his father, he's taken lessons from another player rep of mine, John Brumback abd has expressed a desire to get some lessons from one of my other new player reps, Danny DiLiberto! He gleans all he can from any good players he can. He recently beat Cliff Joyner in a bar table tournament and has been playing in a lot of local tournaments. He's getting a reputation of being a tough player to beat in the adult tournaments. I'm hoping to have his new "Sherm Cues" in his hands soon! Then I want to see him take the world, like a storm!

Just more hot air!

More than just poise, he speaks more intelligently than a good number of them. That is one articulate and mature 11 year old, his parents should be very proud of the way this young man presents himself. Others should take note.

I just watched the interview, and the thing that struck me most about it is what Landon said at the end...

Professional player would be great, but first I need to be the best I can be as a junior player.

Now that shows a lot of maturity right there! Sounds like he won't be making the same mistake as Michelle Wie of competing against professionals too soon (and losing) in their young career. One should first learn how to win before he/she can become a consistent champion.

I would like to add a quick "Landon" story if I could.

I was playing Landon in a tournament recently in Chattanooga, Tn. He had just defeated Cliff Joyner to put him out of the tournament. Needless to say, he was playing well. It was a race to 9. I was playing well, but Landon got the jump, and was ahead 7-4 in the match. On his break in the 12th game, he failed to pocket a ball. I was fortunamte enough to run that rack and 2 more afterwards to bring the score to 7-7. An unknowing bystander commented, "I can't believe that you are trying so hard to beat an 11 year old child". I laughed and commented that the people in pool circles didn't really consider him a child, but a formidable opponent. I didn't have to wait but a couple of seconds to prove my point. I broke in the 15th game, and failed to pocet a ball. Landon ran the set out on me.

Landon's future in pool is as bright as he wants. The young man is that talented. I have had the pleasure of playing and talking with both Stan and Landon on several occasions through the past few years.

I would also like to say a thing about his father, Stan. Stan is a great guy, and a great player himself. I commend him for keeping Landon's feet on the ground and his head screwed on correctly. Landon is down to Earth and humble, and I think that Stan's direction is the cause.

Good luck to Landon in the future.

Mike

He's a darling boy. I hear his parents are very good at keeping him balanced. I have a clip that I sent to Tim's but I can't figure out how to post it. Maybe she'll do it when she get's home later tonight.

Congrats Landon and Stan for being such a great Dad!

Hope to see you soon.

My Landon story

I first met Landon when he was about 5 or 6 I think. He was taking lessons in our pool room with Mark Wilson. I didnt think much of it at the time. Guess I wasnt paying attention. He would get my attention several years later.

At the 2005 DCC, Landon was preparing to play Jose Parica. I guess this is the first time they played and Jose didn't know who he was. Jose comes up to the table and says, "I have a match here in a few minutes". A polite way of saying I need the table. Landon replies" So do I, I'm Landon". Jose has a surprised look on his face, priceless. After warming up they lag for the break. Jose put his ball about 2 inches off the rail. Landon's ball ends up about 1/2" off the rail. Jose has a big smile and shakes his head, he looks at everyone chuckling in the audience. Then he says" I sure hope you dont PLAY this good too!" I think Jose won the first game. Then Landon ran out from the 2 ball on the second game. At this point Jose stopped laughing and smiling, he was all business. Jose won the match but Landon won either 3 or 4 games off him. Everyone cheered whenever he won a game. It was a great, entertaining match to watch. When I ran into Jose in the elevator later that day I asked him what he thought of Landon. He replies," Hopefully, I will be retired before he grows up!" He was laughing....

At the 2006 DCC, I didnt get to see Landon play. I think he drew two top players and was out pretty quick. My only story from 2006 was him and Austin Murphy (? I think thats his name) another young player. They were in the lobby one night about 1am. I went to walk my dog (Half rott. half bloodhound, pretty big) and the kids all ran over to play with the dog. Landon and Austin end up getting in a wrestling match with "Miller" and running around the lobby with him. It was nice seeing those two kids just have fun and act like kids for once. They are always more professional than most of the adults in that tournament. "Miller" was worn out and slept well that night. End of story.

I'm sure with his talents Landon will have plenty more stories in the future. :)

Great post cueandcushioin. I enjoyed your two stories very much.Your second story reminded me of my brief encounter with Chia Ching Wu last Sunday when I visited the IPT qualifier in Chelmsford...

Between the two tour card final matches, I checked out the main pool room where all the everyday customers shoot (the final qualifier matches were in the "back room", if you want to call it that). Wu was having an extremely jovial game with a 10-year old Taiwanese-American friend. It was nice to see Wu goof around and have fun with this youngster. Although Wu was still shooting lights-out pool, his demeanor was that of a 16-year-old. Laughing and chuckling and hopping around the table after each stroke with his young friend. To me, seeing that was very refreshing...to know that he still knows how to be a kid.

It was extremely funny to see all the everyday customers gawk at the way Wu was playing. I was probably the only one in the main room who knew who he was. I was dying to yell out, "Do you people know who this 16-year-old is? You're looking at the current 8ball AND 9ball champion of the WORLD!!" But Wu seemed to enjoy and relish in his anonymity. I don't think he would have been relaxed and showed his true colors if he was in a pool room in Asia. I ruined his fun, however, when I asked him to pose for a picture with me. :)

Didn't mean to hijack this thread and turn it into a discussion about Wu. I just wanted to also share that it is a nice thing to know that these two extremely young and gifted pool prodigies (Landon and Wu) still know to be a kid. Doesn't seem that pool has corrupted them...yet. ;)

I think it is wonderful to see a young man like this with his attitude and ability. I was fortunate to see him in an exhibition at DCC few years back on the main table, with all of the seats full, he shot trick shot after shot, and he hardly missed a ball, was amazing. I allways enjoy watching him shoot in the DCC, he has the focus of a pro, and doesnt seem to get rattled. Is allways fun to watch the reactions of his opponents.
Landon, please keep enjoying this game, it is refreshing to see young and talented players around, although it makes me feel very old.

Stan,

You've done a great job! Wishing you and your family continued success in the future - look out world!

This is my first post, so hello to everyone. I saw Landon in Greenville about 4 years ago. It was at Don Steven's pool hall. I think his dad came in 4th behind Earl Strickland, Tony Watson, and Mark Gregory. Anyway, it was about 100 degrees outside and even hotter inside. A few of us were shooting the shit outside in the parking lot. Stan is walking from his car into the pool room and Landon comes outside and tells his dad that it is miserably hot. He then pours a pepsi over his face and head. We all laughed and Stan said "that might be the worst move I've seen today".

I met Stan at the 2004 DCC after being somewhat acquainted with him from the CCB.

In 2005 I saw him again and Landon was with him. IIRC Landon had just lost a match and was visibly distraught. I offered him some encouraging words and I guess it helped because a week later he sent me an autographed 9-ball which now sits proudly at the center of my collection.

That was a nice gesture. Thank you Stan and Landon (and Mama Shuffet too)

I also attended a Mike Massey exhibition with Landon as a guest performer. He did very well.
