Congratulations to "van van" Corteza!!!

Turning Stone has a new champion, and his name is Lee Van Corteza, the young up and coming champion from the Philippines!! He hails from the Southern Islands of the Philippines and he mixes it up with the likes of Dodong Andam, Antonio Lining, and of course, the great Efren Reyes.

It's about time for you show 'em who they're dealing with. Looks like players are noticing how good you can play now. Well, tell 'em they aint seen nothin yet.

This is a fact, folks! For all of you guys out there who can play, watch out for this kid. His name will be a household name in the near future.

Oh, Kenny, from Norfolk, if you can read this thread, pm me as soon as you can. I need to talk to you about some business coming up in this area.

It seems like in every major pool championship, we are congratulating a different filipino champion. I guess we have to get used to it, because these guys aren't going away any time soon.

My prediction for this year's U.S. Open - filipino winner! Remember, you heard it here first.

Take a look around at other major sports. The winners are rarely American anymore. Perhaps it is a reflection of our slipping prominence on the world stage. If it wasn't for Tiger, we wouldn't be winning anything.

This is not to be construed as a knock on anyone. Just a reality check.

lee van played my buddy at the open last year and my buddy (not knowing he was in a trap) beat van van 9-4 before losing 9-5 the next set. van van and his backer sat with us and kinda hung out and joked around (along with his backer) for the next two to three days. he seems like a free spirit, just generally happy and smiling alot(kinda like alex) and he was really a nice guy and what a player. he gave tony watson, raj hundal, etc... the wild 8 and 9 playing 10 ball. how strong is that.

Mel, I don't know about the 8 for life - but I'm still waiting on that 7 for life.

He is my bet in the upcoming championship leg of the Guinness 9ball tour starting on August 31. Ronnie Alcano and Corteza are the only 2 Filipino players who qualified for the final tournament. We will once again be able to view all the matches LIVE via TVU/Sopcast.

I watched him beat my man Orcullo two days in a row at Bugsy's in the Philipines. That opened my eyes.

Dude,

We play even!! You ain't gonna rob me!! I know you are still laying down so you can rob old Freddie.. Ha Ha Ha Ha...

Hey Matt, I may be able to bring one of these boys around next month. I'll let you know.. I'm also getting a lot of inquiries about the Pair of Custom cues that my man Leonard brought back with him. You can still get a pair of custom cues at my introductory prizes, if you hurry.

I'll be at Cue Ball tonight if you want to shoot some.

Baby face. How old is he? Are Filipinos young looking or we are just older looking?

Asians don't look old until they're old. When we are old, damn we do look old. :D

He's probably 29-30. He has 3 kids I believe.

Mel, I remember you telling me to watch out for Cortez about three years ago! You said at the time that he might be the best of the young Filipino players. Turned out to be a pretty good prediction.

Even?!! Even?!! Never gonna happen....

I've smartened up. What is the old saying...if you can't beat 'em, join 'em? I've been going in light with Fred and booked nothing but winners. That old timer has been shooting the lights out lately.

I know I'm supposed to beat him.....but for whatever reason (maybe psychological) I can't fade him, and it is more fun going in and watching him play. You've got to admit, there are few more entertaining to watch. Especially when he's playing good.

VARick knows that when he's ready I'm going to put him in the box. People won't know what hit 'em when he starts putting together those Strickland packages.

I thought you had to be a good friend to consider someone a pinoy?

But congrats to Lee Van anyway.

His wins always make me feel good. :D

I've heard that Stepanov was asking for the 7 and Van Van obliged. the match never materialized since Stepanov might had some second thoughts.

Congrats Van Van!

A great player.

Jay: The US Open will have a winner from Europe this year, and his name is Niels Feijen. The World Championship will have a winner from the Philippines, an old toothless man who isn't competing much these days, only playing a lot of money games against the best Filipinos on tight Metrotables in Manila. And winning all the time! Wonder what he is practising for? ;)

And by the way: Europe will win in Las Vegas. No chance for USA this year.

You heard it here first :D

Okay Roy, I propose a sweat bet on the Open, and I think you will like this one. You get all the European players and I get all the filipino players, and we bet $100. If neither a filipino or a European player wins, it's a push (no bet).

That means you get Thorsten, Ralf, Niels, Mika, Marcus etc.
I get Marlon, Alex, Francisco, Ronnie, Dennis, Lee Van etc.

You get all the European players regardless of their current residency and I get the filipinos even if they live elsewhere now (like Alex for instance).

I know some of my guys may not come, but that is the chance I will take.
Let me know what you think.
