cool pool movie coming out

As much as PHJ sucked that one may be worse yet. I cannot believe they keep making pool movies with the young hustler who gets a mentor and then takes on the "big man" in some climactic showdown at the end due to some violent conflict. How the hell do the people who write this shit actually get these movies out there and bought?

That settles it, I am learning how to write a script and then writing one that is going to be way beyond this crap we keep getting. I wont be following this oh so tired formula that mimmicks "The Hustler" only done in more modern times and with about 1/1000th of the class or skill or charsima or setting, ect.... Movies like this crap kill our sport, they dont help it one bit, instead they make it look cheap and boring and fake in the extreme. Why can golf get a movie like "Tin Cup" with a decent storyline and done well or "Legend of Bagger Vance" with top end stars and also done well and we get these straight to the bargin video bin pieces of crap!

You saw this movie already? I've not seen it. Tin Cup Rox for a golf flick - very good ...and I don't play golf :)

So, you're saying the flick takes on the same ole' burnt out line? There r a tones of ways to write a pool movie:

The life of one who strives to simply at his best? - "Best of the best" kinda thing -

On the road - You could go a long long way with this. Remember 'The Sting'?

At the Top and then slipping down - Been a ton to model on this one.

How about using any of lifes trials - only the 'one' happens to be sharp shooter?

The list goes on - drugs? Fantasy? Sci Fi? - Heck ... there really seems to be a demand for a good billiards flick and the story can be anything ...even a toddly luv story. Anything would work. But copying the standard line is simply "cheap", nonThinking trash. I'm bummed out cause the producer had a hand in a really good movie "Swimming with Sharks".

Friday night in Utah - shootin' pool? Where? Only my garage and the scummy crappy '7'er table with zero players at the smoke filled, loud trashy one and only bar called "the One and Only" - go figure. Neah, instead I fill my time typing stuff up for azbilliards :). Just had a blitanzne practice session with meself too <yawn >.

They couldn't find a better actor...

... than Freddie Prinze Junior?? So basically this will be a teeny-bopper flick. I think I'd rather watch Pool Hall Junkies =P

Have any of you guys ever seen a movie called Stickmen? I think it was made in New Zealand or something. I saw it one night at like 3 a.m. on Cinemax. It wasn't that bad really. Better than Pool Hall Junkies but I don't really think it takes much to beat that waste of tape.

I liked poolhall junkies. whats wrong with it? Except that the "pro" plays with a all black carbon fiber stick from dufferin or something.

It's just my opinion, but I think the problem with PHJ is that it tried to be TOO cool. I mean pool is a cool sport played by cool people for the most part but I haven't been in many pool halls where the best shooters in the house were wearing turtlenecked sweaters and shit.

It was completely and utterly unrealistic to the real pool scene and the actual game? It followed such a predictable formula that it seems to have been written using a "Script Writing for Dummies" handbook? None of the characters had any personality whatsoever, even Walken who is a great actor and looked like he would rather be doing anything else then stuck in that piece of crap movie. There is honestly nothing about PHJ I can actually say was good, you ask whats wrong with it but I can find nothing right with it.

Celtic's right, PHJ sucked. I made the mistake of buying it before I'd seen it and I wish I could get my 15 bucks back. The Hustler is by far the best pool movie so far and probably ever will be. It's amazing how the director, writer, cast, etc. captured the reality of the game in that movie. When Eddie is having the picnic with his girl and is telling her his feelings about pool you can really tell that the writer had a true passion for the game. I think the problem with the newer pool movies is that they put too much unbeleivable stuff in them. The Color of Money was alright but I hated how Tom Cruise acted like he was mentally retarded through the whole thing.

The problem is "formula", there have been so many movies based on "Rocky's" and "Naturals", where can a plot really go? If they show pools seedy side, they are damned and if they make a feel good movie, they are damned. Does anyone think they could outline a movie about a sport that had NO similarities to any other sports movies?

I see it now..
a poolhall built in a cornfield.. oops done that...
a pool player shot down in his youth, only to return... oops done that
an APA pool team that can't win a game, managed by a drunk, gets a female player and a hot shot young guy she loses to playing air hockey.. oops done that...
a young kid, broke in the projects, takes up pool to be world champ.. oops done that...
a hockey player with anger issues, takes up pool and .. oops done that...

First thing you must do is increase your vocabulary and find other words than "crap". The redundancy overwhelms the reader.

Hollywood sees one thing that works and then they copy it.

But what plot is there in pool other than the young gun coming on the scene and going after the "old" top gun. Perhaps they should come out with a movie that imitates the WPBA. Allison, Gerda, Lee, Corr fighting for the top spot and along come Kelly and Ga to fight them. And then the two Sarah's struggling. How easy would it be to fill the movie with sex - straight and gay. LOL With a sub plot at how partners can dump a match to allow the weaker one to stay in the winners side while the stronger easily comes up the loser's side. And of course there would be gambling. Except for some of the sex this could be an all female movie.

They repeat the story line because thats what they think people want to see. Its funny how pool thinks it should clean up its image to get popular, but the general public wants to see the "hustle".

There is one thing to remember when movies like this come out. Even though we all look forward to them and want them to be as real as possible, they arent really made for us. And thats not all bad. We already enjoy pool or we wouldnt be on these boards. If the movies have to take a story line that I dont really like, but gets someone that is not into pool to watch a movie about pool than I say its a good thing. No, the movie may not be accurate about what really goes on in the pool room. But any exposure pool can get to joe (or suzzie) public is alright with me.

I worry enough about vocabulary and proper grammer in my masters thesis. I dont want to worry about it here as well thanks. I come here to take a break from that.

Well, the two good, no, great movies that we do have about pool are not about the Hustler taking off the score at the end. They are about character pure and simple. They are about the dichotomy of self, self-preservation and selflessness. How to be the best person within the enviroment we are in. They are about striving for excellence to go as far as we can go and beyond. And they are about overcoming personal demons.

And they were both based on outstanding literature and directed by world-class directors with world-class talent to work with. I can watch both the Hustler and the Color of Money another hundred times and still pick up another bit of subtlety each time.

The problem with PHJ and such films is that they focus on the hustle and imagined glamour of the "pool shark" without ever really showing the conflict and depth of character present in most pool hustlers. They gloss over it in favor of some half-ass "match-up" scenes. And this, I believe is because they are based on pool from a neophyte's fantasy rather than a writer and director's understanding of human nature.

In my opinion, The Baltimore Bullet is still the king of this formulaic pool fantasy movie and is a thoroughly entertaining film. The best line from that movie is, "I did teach you everything you know, but not everything I know." And everything the current crop of pool-fantasy movie makers knows comes from watching the masters without being them.

My Opinion with Pool Movies.....

Sorry I cant help but put my 2 cents in.

Frankly, I am happy with anything that put focus on Pool or Billiards.

I have the Hustler, Color of Money, Baltimore Bullet, PHJ, etc. I bought them to enjoy and to support the industry, corny, yes but true.

I would love to see a good movie, and it would be a guarenteed winner... The Keith McCready Story. If done correctly, I cant see it being anything but a winner. But, like this "BOOK" that has supposed to come out. I really dont expect it to happen.

Probably the same with St. Louis Louie. The thing is with both of these guys, (call them demons, issues, whatever) was such a interval part of their lives, is it better to tell the story or leave it unsaid?

One other point. NASCAR is the most boring thing for me. But I enjoyed the movie with Tom Cruise. When I mentioned the movie to a NASCAR fan (as in fanatic) he said it was terrible, stupid, on and on. Its just a story, for entertainment. He didnt get it..... and listening to these reviews, WE DONT GET IT EITHER.

Enough of my ramblings.....

Stickmen has to be the worst movie I have ever seen. PHJ is WAY better. but everyone has diffrent tastes.

I read the book "the color of money" they should make that into a movie. the story is completly diffrent than the movie.

I did not like PHJ at all and did not care for Stickmen either.

The problem pool is going to run into is that if another good pool movie does not come out then Hollywood will place POOL in the KISS OF DEATH category.
I heard but am not sure that "prophets" will not make the big screen unless
its major markets and might go straight to rental and PPV.
Thats not a major thing as many many movie got he same route or dont even go that far. Theres a lot of name actors that have been in movies that
never made it.
