NICE - Filipos Kasidokostas, who finished as penultimate in the Crystal Kelly tournament in 2010, has shared himself among the world's top players this year. The 27-year-old Greek was seeded after an impressive match against Frans van Kuijk, in which he missed only once, and in his last match against Eddy Merckx for the semi-finals. There he will meet Dick Jaspers. The other semi-final is the repetition of the final battle in 2010: the match between Marco Zanetti and Torbjörn Blomdahl.

The Greek ex-world champion Kasidokostas reached the semis with high-quality matches. The man who doesn't participate in the world championship in Peru (South America) due to financial problems in his country, will fight for the main prizes in Nice, although Frédéric Caudron did an ultimate attempt to finish in his group before Kasidokostas. The Belgian played a fantastich last match against Marco Zanetti. Caudron finished after only fourteen innings 50-26. With runs of nine, eleven and twelve Caudron achieved the shortest match of the tournament so far.

Nevertheless he missed his place in the top four, because Kasidokostas controled his last match against Eddy Merckx from the beginning. He had to finish within 27 innings to end up before Caudron in the group with his generally average, therefore he was pretty nervous in the closing stage. That's why he missed some bankshots, but nevertheless he finished in 24 innings: 50-36. Eddy Merckx finished as last in the group after his defeat.

In the other group Dick Jaspers, who had nothing to fear after three victories, had to play his last match against his Dutch teammate, the Swede Torbjörn Blomdahl, who also was already seeded for the semifinals. The struggle between the two had a slow start. In the second part Jaspers began to take distance from his opponent. Although Blomdahl increased his personal tournament record (run of fifteen), he didn't succeed to stop the Dutch machine. In the last seven innings Jaspers scored 33 caroms: 50-44 (19).

Crystal Kelly Tournament, final stages:

7/8th place: Sanchez - van Kuijk
5/6th place: Caudron - Sayginer
3/4th place: SF - losers
1/2nd place: SF - winners

Crystal Kelly Tournament, day 6:
Zanetti - Blomdahl 50 - 31 in 18
Jaspers - Kasidokostas 49 - 50 in 21
final: Zanetti - Kasidokostas

Unbelievable finish: Dick makes 5, Filipos 12, Dick 7 then misses matchpoint VERY unlucky and Filipos makes 8 to finish!!! Great performance. Final Zanetti-Kasidokostas

Crystal Kelly Tournament, day 6:
7/8th place Van Kuijk - Sanchez 50 - 27 in 21
9/10th place Merckx - P. Ceulemans 50 - 36 in 36

NICE - The most experienced player and former winner Marco Zanetti will play again the final of the Crystal Kelly tournament in Nice tomorrow. The Italian faces the twenty years younger Filipos Kasidokostas, who survived on a very special way the semifinal against Dick Jaspers, the number one player of the world.

Jaspers, who has eight times winner of the tournament, had focused at the 18th and last edition of Crystal Kelly, which he showed with superb matches so far. But he lost his chance very curiously: he missed his matchball, which he had to play around the table. The ball felt dead into the corner behind ball two, therefor Jaspers remained on 49 caroms.

Filipos Kasidokostas, who began as second, previously came back from 42-30 behind with a run of twelve and grabbed the ultimate chance to defeat Jasper. With a great precision he made his last eight caroms and celebrated his win with a shout of joy.

The finish of both players was pretty incredible: Jaspers made 5, Kasidokostas 12, Jasper 7 (missed matchbal with bad luck), Kasidokostas 8.

Kasidokostas is of the type: what's good, is coming soon. In 2006 he finished second in the final of the world championship in Rotterdam behind Jaspers. Three years later he earned the crown in Lausanne. Meanwhile, the Greek place has already climbed up to to of the world and Marco Zanetti will have to show all his qualities to keep his young rival behind.

Torbjörn Blomdahl and Marco Zanetti played the other semi-final, in which the Italian took a comfortable lead, scoring a quick run of twelve (third inning). He built up the advantage further and further during the game: 42-20 and 50-31 at the finish. Zanetti is again in the final. He won the event last year by beating Blomdahl in a barrage in the final.

For the last places was already dueled. Frans van Kuijk won in a good match for seventh place 50-27 against Daniel Sánchez (21 innings). The best run of Van Kuijk was ten.

As in 2010, Peter Ceulemans finished on tenth and last place. The two Belgians, Eddy Merckx and Ceulemans, had to fight long. The Flemish battle was finally dominated by Merckx, who won 50-36.

Filipos kasidokostas wins the 18th and last crystal kelly against zanetti with the score of 50-38/28. Zanetti was behind 14-45/20!

It is odd to see Sanchez so far down in the ranking and with such a "low" average. But it seems his heart is not in it right now as he stated in an interview after the recent European event (video on Kozoom). Hope he can turn this around and he stays in the sport.
