cue connection won't stay tight

Hello everyone
I have a Mcdermott cue with a wood to wood joint. It seems that after a short while of playing, the connection becomes a little loose and I have to keep screwing it back together tight. Is there a quick fix for this, to make the threads tighter and stay tight? It's a pretty new cue and I don't know of any reason why it would be so loose like this. I actually have a few other Mcdermott cues and they all seem to screw together with a little too much slack. Any suggestions for a tighter fit? Thanks for any help!

I need you to measure the length of the pin from the joint to the top. Then I need you to measure the distance INSIDE the shaft. I had a few cues like that come my way. The only solution was to get someone to shorten the pin a little. Of course, one of them was a cue with a wood pin, but the solution worked out in both instances.

Jim Mcdermott told me this trick himself. Swab the inside of the threads in the SHAFT with car past wax, useing a Q-tip. Let dry & the hole will be tighter...JER

i get rid of my dents with a cotton swab and hot water, so i would suggest, using a cotton bud, dipping it in hot water, and get the insides of the threads in the wood damp. the wood would expand (lift) for a tighter fit.

The same thing works a little better if you use water thin super glue on the cotton swap to coat the threads first. Do this a few times until it is as tight as you want it. Then use the cue wax on the swab to coat the threads and it will stop the screeching sound the threads make with the glue on them.

Most likely, it is not the Threads that are at fault. No matter how tight or loose the threads are when screwing it together, the cue should not loosen up.
You need to have someone re-face the joint surfaces of the butt and/or the shaft.

correct

Your correct Sheldon. If it goes down and backs off, it's not flat.

That's my experience when this happens so far as well. If they screw all the way down like they should in the first place, then loosens during play, they usually need refaced. Sometimes you can see It through the joint when screwed together if you hold it up to a light. Be carefull If you break with this cue, because if It has wood threads in the shaft, as many of them do, and comes loose before you break, It could chip some threads out of the shaft.

Ofcoarse, I guess there are other possibilties as well, and could not be sure without seeing it. I had a Mcdermott, and the threads had some minor play in them, but the joint was solid when tightened By hand. It was a very solid cue when screwed together, and the threads never stripped out, no matter how much I tightened it. I built another shaft for it, and slightly underbored the hole before I cut the threads. The threads are snug all the way through assembly proccess now. I did'nt need to do It, but needed a new shaft anyway, so figured I would try It. Good Luck With It.

simple long term fix take some water based clearcoat in a eye droper fill the hole in the shaft up suck it out with a vacuam hose and when the clear dry,s it will stay tight for the life of the cue one hint the longer you leave it in the hole the tighter it get,s so suck it out in a hurry the clear dry,s in a hurry and seal,s the threads to that size for the life of the cue. if it,s not real loose then just put the clear in the hole with a cotton swab and let it dry.
