Cuemakers - Define This Cue To Me

Aloha cuemakers,

If I came to you and asked for "this" cue, what would your answer be?

"What you would use to make what YOU feel would be YOUR best hitting cue?"

Example: I would use XXX wood, XXX joint, XXX ferrule, XXX taper, etc., etc., etc.

I am interested in what cuemakers think about what comprises THEIR best hitting cue.

I'm NOT interested in wraps, inlays, etc., UNLESS you feel THAT is a NEEDED feature of YOUR best hitting cue.

I am looking forward to any and all responses.

Hope everyone has a nice weekend. :)

I could tell you what I used in the cue that I thought was the best hitting cue I had made but making another and being sure that it would match the best hitting cue might be another thing. Wood is wood and each piece is somewhat different. Also, as explained before 'best' is subjective from player to player or maker to maker.

That is VERY true, however I was hoping that people would provide some ideas on the types of wood they THINK are preferable to another type, etc.

Some of the old school makers used to claim that "ebony" was the best and "full-splice" vs "short splice" etc., etc.

I was wondering if that same line of thought still resonated with the current makers available today.

Aloha.

It's the cue that feels the best in your hands........... the cue that you are able to shoot the best with.......... etc

There is no best wood or construction type......... a good pool player can beat you with a broom handle with a tip on it...

It all in what you like.........\

No beating around the bush here .
If I had time to make me one ?
Straight grain Brazilian Rosewood ( uncored ), straight grain maple handle , G10 joint screw, phenolic or stag collars, 3/4 long threaded melamine or micarta ferrules, compound taper butt and shaft taper ( I hate straight butt taper and "pro-taper shaft ) and old Moori medium tip on honey colored tight maple shaft .

I would have leather wrap though. And I like lighter cues now. If you want 19 oz or over, replace the G10 joint screw with brass or ss.

Thank you for your EXCELLENT response. This is EXACTLY the type of information I am looking for. I am interested in maybe buying one LAST custom cue and I want it to be a PLAYER...not a LOOKER.

Aloha, and once again, thank you. :)

P.S. Do you have a "ball park" figure of how much a cue like that should cost to make?

But Joey.......... that's the cue you like and it sounds like a great one......

It's not for everyone...........

Shaft -
Kamui Brown Medium tip
Ivory ferrule
12.75mm
Standard taper on my 6-pie laminated shafts
Ivory joint collar
Butt -
6-pie laminated Ebony, single taper
Ivory joint
No wrap
Total weight of cue 18.9oz
Cue had floating points which may or may not have effected the playability of the cue. Second shaft is 13.00mm and does not have the same hit although the other specs are the same.
Sister cue has wrap, similar inlays but no ivory. Plays close but not as nice.

Edit: Cue has a G-10 3/8x10 joint pin.

I would use a Ebony forearam and butt sleeve. Laminated maple one piece core. Ivory joint with a brass radial joint pin! 12.85m/m LD shaft with Titan ferulle and Kamui SS tip. Irish linen wrap. That has the absolute best feel and playability to me!!!

Thank you. This is the type of information I am looking for. From your description of this cue, would it have a "stiff" hit or a little "softer" hit? I like cues that have a good solid feel, but I don't like a real "ping" sound when I hit the ball. I like cues that can move the ball around the table easily, but I am not fond of the "whippy" shafts that were used on a lot of cues back in the 70s when 9-ball became the game.

Just get one of chuck starkeys cues. Best shooting cue I've ever held. A lot can be said for a custom that shoots like an old old one piece. Friend of mine has one. Been trying to steal it off him. Maybe I'll have to order myself.

No problem chuck. I know what I like in a cue and you build what I like. I'll be giving you a call one of these days.

Straight grain maple forearm, cored with purple heart. Solid purple heart handle with straight grain butt sleeve. Ivory or antler joint with juma or elforyn joint collars. Juma or elforyn buttcap with no bumper. Short 1/2 inch ivory ferrule threaded on with a fiber pad on it thats been shortened to half the original thickness. Phenolic plug in the butt and the shaft joint area. 5/16 14 flat faced joint. Can you say PING! Lol. Oh, and it would be 60 inches too.
