I just purchased MCB WHITE FERRULE ROD. so that I could make my own ferrules. I just made & installed one on one of my shafts. but there seems to be one or 2 dark spots on the ferrule after I turned it down. seems like they are dark spots that were inside the ferrule rod. is this normal? if not what can I do to remove them or conceal them. I dont want to say where I purchased the rod. I dont want to start bashing before I know what is expected of MCB.

the dark spots or marks, is from the "VAT", not being clean, when making the material.
Who is MCB?
No need to bash, just ask for your money back or them to send new "CLEAN ROD". These things just happen from time to time. if they get there act together, you should have no more problems.

I have had the same thing happen with Ivorine 3 rods and also Aegis rods. The marks I have seen look like tiny "hairs" or "threads (string)" of a dark color. It certainly is very frustrating.
I had one job a while ago where when I made my final cut on the ivorine ferrule, there was a gap in the material lengthwise. It was as if one strand of the fiber they used was missing at that diameter. I put another ferrule on and the same thing happened. It turns out that the last foot or so of material from my 3 foot long rod had this defect. After that I decided to try Aegis, and although I haven't had any "missing strands" yet, I do have the occasional dark mark.
I thought these two materials were supposed to be the "better" materials. Does anyone know of a material, besides ivory, that consistently produces blemish free ferrules?

I got mine from Atlas Billiards. The more experienced guys might have other sources as well.

I don't want to sound like a spam but if you can get Ivor-X ferrules for $3.90 each, and lower if you buy more volume, capped and threaded, it might not be worth the time and effort to machine your own ferrules.
But, if you want melamine, aegis or Ivorene rods, atlas billiards or atlas fibre are a great source imo.
I have some really fine weave Linen Melamine ferrules that are really clean. You almost never find a spot in these. So far maybe one out of 20 has had a speck in it. The older ones really seemed to have a lot of specks in them as do most other brands of these types of ferrules. They sell for $30 for 10 one inch long and already threaded ferrules. The 1.25" long ones cost $35 for 10 ferrules.

I just got a order in from Atlas and the Aegis II rod I got is bad has a lot of pits holes in it and brown spots. I put a ferrule on for a guy and it was bad, I wouldn't want to play with it. I told him to bring it back next week after I got some new rod in. Also a third of my order was missing when I got the package this is a UPS problem.

The guy that I get mine from absolutely refuses to sell any rod. So pre threaded ferrules might be worth the extra money to you to get really good stuff.seven said:

It is just part of working from raw materials. For the most part these materials are industrial stuff not manufactured for their looks that cue makers adapt to their pool cues. Manufactures I am sure do their best, but they are using the same machinery to produce different products and some times cross contamination happens. That is just the way it is, sometimes you do a job twice and get paid once and sometimes a job goes so easy it was like stealing.

The Ivorine III I got from Atlas about six years ago was great stuff. The Ivorine rod that I have bought the last couple of years is hit and miss. The most recent rod had alot of pitting in it and even with super sharp cutting bits it still pitted when being cut. Atlas refunded my money on what was left of the rod. The only way I got a ferrule to turn out good was to leave it over sized by a large amount to bypass the pitting and sand it down to finished size. Alot of extra work for a ferrule job.

When is the last time you have purchased anything from NVF? I used to get all of my phenolics from them but the last time I called they had been bought out by another company. I was told that they were no longer carrying much of their line of stuff cue-makers were interested in and they raised their minimum item amount to 500.00.
